Excellent read and accoun of what its like to sail solo Xcross the Atlantic and integrate into that yachting community

Excellent read

I did happen to accompany Matt on the leg described in this book between Madeira and the Canaries and everything in that section including the tale about the "big tuna that got away" are true - Matt I actually tied the lure onto the line which subsequently failed when trying to get that tuna out of the water. However I like the story better as it is....

Further the book is a real insight into one persons North Atlantic circuit sailing trip and it is an attempt to explain what it is really like practically to sail this voyage and also from a personal perspective how you deal with the long sailing passages alone and then integrating back into society and also integrating into the floating society of sailors. Would really recommend!

I'm taking a spectroscopy class in which we are using this text. I find it to be very poorly written. NMR thoery is a very complex subject, however it is made more complex by the MANY errors we have found in the calculations and tables of the book. Some things are also very poorly explained. I'm very disappointed with it, but to be fair, with some supplemental reading you can get a good foundation in NMR with this book. I pity any UG that has to read this.

Organic Spectroscopy Made Clear

Crews is not a hardcore treatise of the subject. It does not cover the quantum mechanics behind spectroscopy and the complicated mathematical underneath the concept. Instead it discusses the fundamentals and results of such quantum calculations which apply to identification of organic compounds. Basic concepts of nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy, ultra violet spectroscopy are thoroughly covered with examples and charts. Crews is a splendidly-written, straight-forward work that would be suitable for advanced undergraduates who had finished at least one year of organic chemistry, for those who pursue chemical research, and entering grad students.

WORST SPEC BOOK

This book explains absolutely nothing in detail. I ended up having to drop my Organic Spectroscopy class because this book did not go in to detail enough what was required to learn for the class. I had to use 2 other books. The figures have little to no explanation. The HMQC, COSY, etc NMR didn't explain anything. That was covered in half my class and I didn't understand it at all. Tell your professor to choose another book as supplemental material for such a class.

I cannot more highly recommend any books by Mcdougall. This doctor has been a patient advocate since before his first book published in 1980. If you wonder why surgeons always recommend surgery or why you have to see your doctor every time you need a refill or just would like a realistic take of the effect of diet on chronic disease, there is no better book.

I bought this book because it was referenced in another book. I got the information I was looking for but overall I think that McDougall's works are repetitive and he has been beating on this anvil for quite awhile. Worth owning but buy it used :)

A professional drummer, Dean offers a practical, succinct guide for drummers and other instrumentalists, and also for educators, composers, arrangers, and recording/production professionals. This book is part of the 'Music Secrets for the Advanced Musician' series, which has also dealt with clarinet, oboe, and saxophone. In the present volume, most of the 52 'secrets' (a chapter is devoted to each) pertain to drumset-specific concepts: practicing, techniques, accuracy, equipment, recording strategies, and soloing. Other chapters will be helpful for non-drummers as well (though the author approaches the subject through a percussive lens). Topics here include timing strategies, health strategies (posture, hearing protection, relaxed playing), career planning and preparation (finances, audition tips), marketability and entrepreneurship (self-promotion, versatility), and various performance-related issues (e.g., stage fright). Dean has a knack for explaining techniques, concepts, and methods in a style that is accessible, concise, and to the point. For example, he describes effective practice methods in terms of 'SMART' goals, i.e., goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-based. Other helpful topics include chart-writing skills and fluency, techniques for balancing/aligning the hands and feet ('locked limbs'), and concepts/methods for creative metronome usage and inspired phrasing. Best drummers book!

I have many drum books that always deal with developing various techniques. Faster hands faster feet etc. There are very few books that deal with the drummer as a professional and a person. This book covers not only great insights in technique. but also aspects of being a success as a person who is a drummer. The book deals with professionalism and covers the human side of being a musician. I would recommend this book not only to playing drummers, but also to drum set teachers.

Excellent Book for Designing Principals

This book will teach you the basic fundamentals that should be used through any type of design. This book will not teach you how to draw, but will help you understand that what ever medium you choose to use, wether it be pencils, paint, digital, etc., the same rules or principals of design apply to any medium. When you look at pictures you will see design differently and understand designing better once you read this book. I had the pleasure of having the author, Buy Shaver, as an Instructor at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. As an artist, you are always learning new techniques. If you have the opportunity to take a class with Mr. Shaver, you will not be disappointed. He has put his knowledge of what he has learned about designing in his book.
