If you like adventure, with a little bit of romance, history, and some fantastic locations thrown in, this is the book for you. I'm an avid reader of time travel and have never seen this concept tackled, so I was eager to see where the story would take me.  This book contains moderate profanity and some scenes of intense sci-fi violence, roughly equivalent to a PG-13 film. Nathan Van Coops lives in St. Petersburg Florida on a diet comprised mainly of tacos. He enjoys old planes, motorcycles, and Volkswagens; and contends that there is such a thing as "dressy" flip-flops. He is the author of two time travel adventure novels: In Times Like These, and, The Chronothon.

5 Stars with a strong warning...

Ben's time travel adventures continue with Mym, his favorite lady, playing a crucial background role. This time, he finds himself being maneuvered into participating in a rigged and highly unethical intergalactic time travel competition, one for which he is particularly untrained.

In terms of well developed characters and an intricate story line that never falls apart, this book was pure pleasure to read. None of Ben's St Petersburg friends come along on this adventure so there are a full cast of new characters and a lot of time loops with subsequent ramifications that follow. As an experienced time travel reader, I enjoyed the challenge of keeping up. For newbies, I say just go with it and do the best you can. It's worth it.

There were some other jewels about the book that stood out for me:

* The one liners that come out of Ben's narration are brilliantly in keeping with his character and help with pacing. "...... or if I'm just experiencing the kind of luck only stupid people enjoy..." , is one example that comes in the middle of a particularly harrowing fight scene. It doesn't interrupt the flow of the story and, yet, it gives you a split second of breathing space to integrate the human aspect of the fight.

*The quotes from Dr. Quickley's diary entries that top each chapter also help with the story's pacing. They are like little time travel breaks in your mind as you move forward in the story. I don't know if the author intended it this way or not, but it gave me, the reader, a little philosophical time travel hiccup - like a one minute time blink - as I took a break to imagine what was going on in Dr Quickley's world when in wrote the entry. We know the when because the entries are dated, but where was he when it wrote it and what part of his when was he living? That's never answered because it's not part of the story other than the "Grandfather of Time" is always present that way. Still, the commentary often brings a smile to your face.

*There are some historical facts in the story that I had to wonder if they were true in "our timeline". For example, I didn't know Seattle was built on tidal land until I read it in The Chronothon. A quick Google search confirmed it. This kind of thing added another layer of "reality" to this fantasy story. Well done.

* The author handles a love scene that creates the entire picture in your mind without spilling one nitty gritty detail. It was fifty shades of perfect for this genre of book.

* Once again, the author neatly sets up the next book in the series without leaving the story of this book hanging one iota.

That's all the good stuff. Now here's the WARNING: Think twice about reading this book if you have a strong aversion to blood, guts, death, and alien horrors. Although none of it is ever gratuitous, the author brings it alive in full living color in your imagination. At one point, I almost told myself it was too much and wanted to put the book down. "I'll finish this chapter," I promised myself, "and then decide if it's not for me." Needless to say, I kept reading to the end and am looking forward to his next book. Still, forewarned is forearmed on the blood, guts, death, and alien horrors.

Thrilling and entertaining

I've read some good novels in the last year. This is a great one. It's the sequel to In Times Like These, which I thoroughly enjoyed. You don't have to have read book one to read book two, as everything you need to know is explained as you go.

Nathan Van Coops has done a masterful job of creating a plausible time travel method, as well as ensuring it's not easy for those who wish to use it. As Vladimir Nabokov said, it's the author's job to get their protagonist stuck up a tree and then throw rocks at him. Van Coops never once lets the protagonist off the hook. Indeed, he piles on the problems perfectly, and allows him to interplay with a large cast of characters - some good some evil - as they try to survive this epic time race. The protagonist's mettle is tested thoroughly, and his character is revealed through adversity - which is what marks out great writing from good.

The excursions into history are very well researched and believable, and the characters are all well-drawn. There are plenty of edge-of-your-seat moments as the action unfolds. Each of the mini-excursions into a new period of time builds up solidly towards a very satisfying denouement. This is a must-read for any sci-fi fan.

Cool science bit. Here's the background: the protagonist and his friends literally fell into the world of early time-travel. It's achieved by means of a watch-like device on the wrist, but there are great risks involved. In order not to reappear in a different part of the Earth's orbit (minus the planet), or be fused into other people or objects, you have to use an anchor when you jump. The anchor has to have been around at the time you want to jump to. That anchor will stop you reappearing in the neverwhere. Other limiting factors are that you can only jump a certain number of years at a time, and that your device needs recharging.

A little of Everything...So So Good!

You ever find yourself sitting down at a nice restaurant and everything on the menu looks delicious, and you find yourself disappointed because you can only choose one entree to eat? Well, Chronothon is the "Sampler" of time travel books. A little of everything. Some fans of the genre hone in on specific time periods, or are die hard futurists and enjoy sci-fi theoretical tomorrowlands. This book finds the protagonist wrapped up in a conspiracy, masked as a time travel extreme sporting event. Racing at break neck speed through the past and into the future.

I really loved this book, I often find myself intrigued by the idea of a novel but than get bored by the middle of the story because some ideas need to remain short stories not novels...I loved how this book in a sense is very much a novel but each chapter felt like a short story as you never knew where the story was going both in the overall mystery of the story but each time gate would literally whisk the characters to an entirely new time and place. The complete change of time and place so often kept the story moving and the pages turning. I gotta read the next chapter...Where is the next level?

Despite the story being disjointed by its nature, you really come to put it all together by the personality of the protagonist Ben. This book has some extreme tension, and I would say it is the most action packed time travel novel I have ever read....and I am a Time Travel Guru of sorts...Ben relieves some of the tension by being his goofy self and at times certain chapters come off as an action comedy, which for me was highly enjoyable. Van Coops has a genre breaker in this book as one of the levels is completely survival horror at its best. I have to compliment the author in presenting so much in a single novel. Despite, the book loaning itself to so much action, I felt as a reader I came to care very much for our protagonist and his fellow racers of the Chronothon, who are more friends than competition.

Can't decide if you enjoy time travel or history? I recommend the sampler...A little taste of the Chronothon will have you coming back for more for sure....This is book 2 of 3 so all the possible avenues this leaves open for exploration is astounding...Can't wait for what's next!

Sickening....learn exactly how they work you over...

You know about love bombing, gaslighting and brainwashing, but the whole enchilada of techniques is laid out for you.

Read ...and after the period of total incredulity that this is what is happening /has happened to you...understand and get out.

LOVED IT!

LOVED IT! This was the most creative of the bunch. He really made the connection to tools and how they were used.

Though my N is the altruistic, somatic, covert type rather than the overt and extremely pathological kind, it did give me insight into what he did, why he did it and why it made me feel soooo damn crazy. Unlike H G Tudor, mine has no idea what he is. And of course it is all my fault!

I also read Danger: 50 things to never do with an N - finally understood why EVERY vacation was ruined! Also read Evil and Manipulated, Fuel and Escape. Departure Imminent too. That was enough for me to "get it" that my N is an N. Very worth the price and time to read.

After reading all of these I had a dream about a monster who said: "this is who I have been hiding from you - This is what I really am." Last of the denial dropped away the next morning and I am in recovery!

Very good, if flawed, book with excellent tips

The intent of the book is to provide its readers with ways to make their code more “Swift-like” (for example, more functional in its style) and more efficient. There are almost no books that do so at this point in Swift’s development. In fact, most Swift books are at the introductory level. “Functional Programming in Swift” by Chris Eidhof, Florian Kugler and Wouter Swierstra covers more advanced features, but it is written with a background in mathematics in mind, as are many books on functional programming. Likewise, “Advanced Swift” by Chris Eidhof and Airspeed Velocity, as its name implies, is at a more advanced level. Each of these books is valuable, but Swift
High Performance fills a gap by attempting to cover advanced features while remaining more approachable for the beginning to intermediate programmer.

One flaw in the book is that in the first two chapters on Swift’s power and how to create a proper Swift app architecture, a lot of material is covered in very terse manner, with no discussion of how they impact performance — which is the purpose of the book. Worse yet, Swift’s features are simply listed and concepts mentioned without explanation in most cases. A prime example of this is the coverage of Swift’s functional language and standard library features in Chapter 2. All of this can be learned more easily and in more detail in Apple’s Swift book. In my opinion, this makes these first two chapters completely disposable. It is not until Chapter 3 (after one third of the book) that
performance issues in Swift are first covered.

Some of the source code exhibits minor glitches with the latest version of Swift on Xcode 7.2 that are not fixed by automatic conversion to the latest Swift syntax. These are inconveniences rather than show-stopping bugs. For example, the Set.swift file in the Data Structures project calls advance(), not advanceBy(). More puzzling is that numerous empty print() calls are left throughout the code. Why use print if no message is to be displayed?

There are several grammatical, syntax and spelling mistakes that bypassed the editors. I won’t mention them all, but three can be found almost immediately: (1) In the sample program demonstrating tuples in Chapter 1, a string of “not fount” is used twice. (2) Computer scientist Donald Knuth’s name is misspelled. (3) An “@IBOutles” is mentioned in Chapter 2. These errors could have been easily corrected by an editor or reviews prior to publication, but I’ve also noted the same problem of a large number of spelling and grammatical errors — including very awkward sentence syntax that made reading difficult — in another recent Packt book. The publisher needs to devote more time and effort in polishing the released books.

Despite these shortcomings, I still recommend buying this book. It is in Chapters 3-7 where this book truly shines, starting with a discussion of running the REPL within Xcode, which I would not have thought of on my own. It covers ways of improving the performance of swift code, with some sample code’s generated assembly code and performance displayed. A lot of valuable information is contained in these chapters that makes reading “Swift High Performance” worthwhile.

Specific Comments:

Chapter 1- Exploring Swift’s Power and Performance-
Chapter 1 is simply an overview of the features of Swift. Most of these features are given only a cursory mention. This chapter is therefore not really necessary, as readers of the book would be people who are already programming in Swift and want to improve the quality of their code. This chapter could have been almost entirely omitted, with perhaps a few points merged into the following chapters.

In the Clean Code Summary, the sample program should be finding people in the array of Persons who below the age of 18, then lower-case their names. In fact, the program finds people below the age of 18, then lower-cases the names of everybody in the original array, not just those below age 18. This is true of both the Swift and Objective- C versions of the code.

Terms are presented without defining them. For example, in the discussion on functional programming, the term “first class function” is mentioned but not described. In the Generic Purpose section, the function minimum is made generic, but reason for the need to make the generic conform to the Comparable protocol is not mentioned.

The section on Objective-C interoperability should have expanded slightly on its coverage of upcasting and downcasting, and why there are differences between them. Specifically, it is first stated that casting is usually an unsafe operation, yet the sample code suggests that is it only downcasting that is unsafe. In addition, which Objective-C types have toll-free bridging that removes the need to typecast?

The coverage of optionals as a way to avoid the Pyramid of Doom problem should be combined with the coverage of optionals in Chapter 2.

Chapter 2- Making a Good Application Architecture in Swift-
In the beginning of the section on functional programming, it’s stated that a function should only operate with arguments passed to it. Perhaps this should be rephrased to state that it should operate only on arguments passed to it and not class properties or global variables.

It’s stated that functional programming describes what you want to do and not how you want to do it, but this statement is not explained. I realize that this is not a book on functional programming, but if a concept is mentioned, it should also be explained. This is a general problem throughout this chapter.

Chapter 3- Testing and Identifying Slow Code with the Swift Toolkit-
The coverage of REPL is only two pages. While this is probably adequate for Apple programmers, who will more likely use the playground instead, a future edition of the book might need to cover it in more depth because the open-source version of Swift for Linux does not include playgrounds. A good resource for using playgrounds is Erica Sadun’s book “Playground Secrets and Power Tips”. Likewise, a complete reference on creating interactive documentation for playgrounds is Erica Sadun’s “Swift Documentation Markup: an Illustrated Tour”.

In the discussion of the LLDB debugger, it’s stated that “because we made an iOS app”, a breakpoint will be made in the didFinishLaunchingWithOptions method. I could not find where this iOS app is discussed.

The coverage of running the REPL within Xcode, and doing performance logging with console logs is very good.

One section that I fould a bit puzzling is the section comparing the performance of variables (declared with var) versus constants (declared with let), It looks like the code using variables and the code using constants perform the same! Average time for constants = 12.681316, and for variables = 12.681316. I assume this was a cut-and-paste error by the author.

Chapter 4- Improving Code Performance-
The section on functions and methods is very useful. It directly compares the speed of function calls at different scopes in the program, such as calling global functions, static methods, final methods and instance methods.

The section on removing print logs has some excellent tips, as does the coverage of using the final keyword for functions.

The direct comparison of generated assembly code for value objects (structs in this case) and reference objects (classes) clearly demonstrates the ability of Clang to optimize code for value objects.

Chapter 5- Choosing the Correct Data Structure-
The Collection Memory Allocation section starts by mentioning performance optimization of collections “when you instance and instance of it”. That should probably say “instantiate” instead.

Chapter 6- Architecting Applications for High Performance-
This chapter discusses concurrency by initially stating the duties of the main thread. It might help some readers if thread was defined and discussed first.

The Threads section shows sample code calling the NSThread.detachNewThreadSelector method, but the method is not really discussed
aside from stating that it can create a new thread. What are the advantages or disadvantages of using it versus using another way to create a new thread?

In the first paragraph of Designing Asynchronous Code, it’s stated that the technique just taught will “get more function style Input -> Output functions style”. I assume the author means that the code’s style adheres to a functional programming style better.

Chapter 7- The Importance of Being Lazy-
Very nice coverage of lazy loading and lazy sequences and collections.

Chapter 8- Discovering All the Underlying Swift Power-
This chapter mentions many tools, but really offers little insight into how to use them to analyze core or to find performance bottlenecks or improper memory usage.

In the coverage of the Hopper Disassembler, it’s stated that we’ll compare optimized and unoptimized code, but I could not find the results of the compilation. Where is the code compared? This appears to be missing.

Surprisingly engaging, illuminating and endearing

I was initially concerned that my limited production Swift experience (so far) would hinder the usefulness of this book but the gentle, unassuming nature of the writing soon made that concern dissipate. Instead I got a behind the scenes look at what Swift is, what it does well, and why - from the basics up. In knowing these things, you are then prepared for the second half of the book which helps you to think at the architectural level about programming in Swift.

The style is a little informal, and it seems that maybe English is a second language for the author, which may be an issue for some readers. I found it to be endearing and allowed the obvious love that the writer has for Swift, and for programming in general, to come though. It felt more like he was talking to me, instead of lecturing or essaying.

Given I have page after page of highlights to go back and review, refer to and turn into a crib sheet, I think it's a worthwhile read for everyone wishing to take their Swift developer skills to the next level. Perhaps not essential, but certainly highly beneficial.

A must if you want to start getting more out of swift performance

If you like going deeper into a language and missed the kind of insights into optimization you can get for other language, this is the book for you.
Swift is getting more and more mature and a guide like this is what was actually missing as you often end up asking yourself if what you're doing is the most efficient thing.
Probably not a good fit for a complete beginner, but you don't need to be a guru either to appreciate it.

In this candid and critical account, Muster follows the inner workings of the movement and the Hare Krishnas' progressive decline.
 
Combining personal reminiscences, published articles, and internal documents, Betrayal of the Spirit details the scandals that beset the Krishnas--drug dealing, weapons stockpiling, deceptive fundraising, child abuse, and murder within ISKCON–as well as the dynamics of schisms that forced some 95 percent of the group's original members to leave. In the midst of this institutional disarray, Muster continued her personal search for truth and religious meaning as an ISKCON member until, disillusioned at last with the movement's internal divisions, she quit her job and left the organization.
 
In a new preface to the paperback edition, Muster discusses the personal circumstances that led her to ISKCON and kept her there as the movement's image worsened. She also talks about "the darkest secret"–child abuse in the ISKCON parochial schools--that was covered up by the public relations office where she worked.

Who has not witnessed their American converts' dancing in the streets in their orange robes, confidently baring their shaven heads, or endured their fundraising efforts in airports? Against those finger cymbal-clanging memories of the 1970s, Muster's narrative of her insider's experience of ISKCON is nothing less than mesmerizing. That the American adventure into the worship of the noble Krishna would come to grief after the death of their ISKCON's charismatic Guru Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Praphupada in a scandal of murder, greed and corruption was perhaps not surprising to those who saw more than the Hare Krishna's superficial celebration of Krishna's love. An example of those who follow and those who don't.

This book is an account of what happens when those who claim to follow the world's oldest scriptures (the Veda's) are actually acting to the contrary. I am sure there are many good Hare Krishna and other Hindu devotees who are sincere, but in all religions there seem to be a group of people who are hypocrites. No religion should be condemmed because of these people, or all religions would be victims. The book tells about those who are good and strict devotees who don't strive to do sinful things and also accounts those who don't exemplify a real Hare Krishna and are not following the Vedic scripture, but just claim to be. This is account that could be applied to all religious paths and their followers. It draws a picture of both sides of a coin and looks at what scholars call the "world's oldest religion" and what other people call a "cult".

an illuminating picture of a young woman's struggle

I loved Nori Muster's book, "Betrayal of the Spirit". It took me back to the old days in Los Angeles when I lived near the Hare Krishna Temple with my ex husband, guitarist John Fahey. John loved this book so much that he has bought it twice (after losing it once on the road). I remember John taking me over to the temple, to what he called "Little India" and introducing me to the chanting, drumming, and the free vegetarian Sunday feasts. We were given the royal treatment, with tours and (I'm sure) people assigned to us to try to convert us. Although neither of us ever became devotees we were always made welcome at the temple and I bought John a drum and he bought me a sari.
"Betrayal of the Spirit" has all of the color and drama of a vivid memory. I could smell the incense, hear the music, feel the emotions of the devotees. The costumes, the makeup, the deities in the temple, they were all there. Even an elephant. What more could a seeker after the exotic want? Nori's intimate description of the inside workings of ISKON satisfied quite a bit of my curiosity about how the organization was run in those days and I found that she portrayed the characters with an attention to detail that really brought them to life for me. I was able to appreciate the conflicts not only between various factions within ISKON, but within each individual. The goal of spirituality was often endangered by the temptation of power.
One of the themes that ran throughout the book was the relationship between father and daughter, and how Nori managed within the context of ISKON to follow in her father's footsteps by becoming a Public Relations worker. Her father's advice and support throughout despite her choice of a very different way of life was touching, and Nori's acceptance of his terminal illness was proof of her spiritual outlook.
"Betrayal of the Spirit" is an illuminating picture of a young woman's struggle to find peace, fulfillment, and structure in a materialistic world where "woman's place" has not yet been decided and men (and women) often long for enlightenment, but settle for money.

Clearly a Masterful Retelling of Challenging Times

Nori Muster's book, Betrayal of The Spirit, can help other people to understand their own journey better. Throughout, she has acknowledged what happened when certain souls took free rein with C & M, control and manipulation, and the high prices paid by the many when these abuses took place. The fact that she was able to grow in relationship with her father during this time is a tribute to them both, and those parts of her story make the reading well worth the price of the book. For anyone who ever wonders about life in ANY heirarchal spiritual organization, PLEASE read this book. You will gain information to help you keep both your eyes and hearts open for the rest of your days. Whilst some people will do darn near anything in the name of adoration and their own glorification, we also learn about the deep essential goodness which other souls will always support. Thank you, Ms. Muster, for doing this world a favor and bringing this book to life. The seeds which you have planted will reap a strong harvest on the side of Truth for long, long time to come.

A good book that will help you maximize your time in Rome

Rome is one of my favorite cities in the world. There's so much history that sometimes you can get lost and distracted easily and miss the top attractions. The Lonely Planet Discover Rome is a solid book that I'd feel confident using as my sole book for traveling to Rome. Overall, there's multiple "Best of" lists so you can make sure that you see the important attractions. Like its DK counterparts, there are lots of photos but in a way, it might seem too busy. The Top 25 of Rome is well detailed.

The book is organized into smaller sections on the various areas of Rome, each with highlights and walking tours. Each section has a fair amount of recommendations, from gelato to meals to nightlife. The recommended itineraries are helpful because with the size and depth of everything to see in Rome, it can get a little overwhelming. There are 4 days worth of itineraries, and they look (from memory of prior trips) to be doable. The pull-out map is concise and helpful and there are smaller maps inside the book.

It doesn't seem like much, if anything, has changed since the prior version of this book. And that's ok. Overall this is a solid guide to Rome and something I'd feel comfortable using on a trip back to Rome. As always, I recommend the more research you do before you leave, the more fun you'll have when there.

Basics with Awesome Photos Needs Additional Information

I lived in Rome many years ago and have always wanted to go back with my loved ones to show them what it was like. According to this "Discover Rome" book from lonely planet it is fairly as I left it with the greatest changes in hotels, shops, and restaurants and apparently far more pizza everywhere.

I really liked the historical chapter, the background information for the nine sections of Rome, and the walking maps but I had one big problem with the guide book... as wonderful as the walking maps are they do not use the same numbers as "Highlights" that start off each chapter and do not even list all of those highlights on said walking map though why is completely unfathomable to me. I think the "Don't Miss" lists in each chapter also need to be included in the walking maps.

The listing of restaurants and shops is good but I think more needs to be said about accommodations instead just a listing in the final chapter -- include the hotels, B&B, and other forms of accommodations in the chapters for the sections of the city that they are in so readers have a better idea of where they might want to stay. Give us some honest reviews of them as well to help us make better choices. or this is more a writer's guide than a useable travel guide.

There are several topics that need to be covered in this book. Sexism and very aggressive stalking by Roman men can be a challenge and frightening if you are traveling alone as a woman or in a group of women. Also unless things have drastically changed we need more about safety particularly pickpockets and thievery in Rome. Mentioning that you want to use the Vatican postal service is also a good idea for such a guide book because they do a much better job than the Italian general services in that area.

Inferior to Eyewitness Travel & Baedeker Guides & LP basic series

The world of travel guides is dominated by two giants: classic, illustrated in color, very detailed Baedeker (since 1839), and more exclusive, profusely illustrated in color, detailed Eyewitness Travel Guides. Lonely Planet (LP) resembles more Baedeker, but Baedeker is better published and handier, has clearer layout and better maps, and its plastic wallet cover holds the guide and map protected in all weather.

The LP Discover series is - as this relatively thin ISBN 1742205704 Rome - in full color, but less detailed than the Baedeker, the Eyewitness, or the LP basic series. It has more illustrations than the Baedeker, but fewer than, and not as good as, the Eyewitness, which is 1 inch longer and thus less handy, but has excellent flexible vinyl bindings, greater number of details, and superior layout, graphics, clarity, and - in general - the quality of being a souvenir\memento.

The content of approx. 72 pages incl. the index is shown by the Amazon.com's "LOOK INSIDE!" function. What cannot be seen is that the LP Discover series including this Rome has covers laminated only outside. For the record, the LP basic series has text detailed comparably to the Eyewitness, however it is not as profusely illustrated and mostly only in 3 colors: black, white, and blue, except a few dozens of pages with photos in full color printed on low quality paper, but still superior to the LP Discover series.

The Real Hitchhiker's Guide

I cannot believe the amount of time and attention to detail that went into this book. Perusing these pages, you will learn how to do just about everything...at least, everything that's truly useful when the chips are down. That's about the only way that I can describe the scope of this tome.
Wilderness survival techniques, aromatherapy, acupressure, meditation techniques, exercise programs, knot tying, and even jokes and magic tricks are just a few of the subjects described and amusingly and richly illustrated within these pages. The whole book adheres to an "ancient wisdom of the Orient" theme, and it's hard to tell whether "Zeek" (the author/illustrator) takes this seriously or not. It doesn't really matter, though, as the advice given is generally very useful. Some fringe topics are covered (the existence of "chi", enemas, fasting, etc.) but at least the author concedes that with health matters, it's best to seek the advice of professionals.
Keeping with the Asian wisdom theme, there is a strong focus in this book on the martial arts. As a martial artist myself, I appreciated this focus and hope that it will inspire readers to investigate a style or two with a qualified instructor. But one need not be a karateka to draw more than enough inspiration and information from these pages, on a wide variety of topics.
This fascinating, unusual book is jam-packed with detailed illustrations on every page. Put a copy on your coffee table or in the bathroom, and your guests are sure to take a genuine gem of wisdom home with them, if they don't take the whole book.

Imagine, if you will, that you are in the company of a man who has travelled the world, seen many things that are NOT in the guidebooks, been in the company of many people both great and small, taken a lot of hard knocks, learned much to prevent repeating any mistakes, and lived to tell about it.
This is the book he wrote.
Equal parts Boy Scout Handbook, Whole Earth Catalogue and "Junior Woodchuck Guidebook" (the impossably complete reference book that Donald Duck's nephews carried with them), with painstakingly detailed illustrations on each and every page, tinted with Oriental wisdom.
Just a sampling of the contents (with randomly chosen pages): "Asian secrets of walking stick combat", "A traveler's guide to self-hypnosis", "Rapid reference accupressure treatments", "Emergency entertainment for bored, whining or fighting kids", "Effective beauty treatments with simple natural ingredients", "How to survive disaster situations", "How to condition for martial art strikes", "Non-violent child control", "Simple and healthy vegetarian recipes", "How to execute classic Kung Fu moves".
My friend, this is the one! From boating emergencies to avoiding a fight, from preventing food poisoning to physical fitness information, from natural therapies to preventing bedwetting, from Laws of the Sea to preventing skin problems, from tying knots to yoga postures....
I cannot say enough about this book. Buy it. Better yet, buy two and hide one copy. Someone is bound to "borrow" this from you.

Unique indeed, but usefull...

This book surprised me with its vast scope and humorous wit. This book is sort of like an encyclopedia of general, and not so general, knowledge. It has everything from the great importance of clear finger nail polish, general navigation, nuclear radiation treatment, tips about sex, how to fish, health (diet, vitamins, etc.) and on it goes. It is illustrated by the author, who in his own right is an enigma though a very intriguing man. This book has it all in a neat little package. This is not a sit-down-and-read kind of book, but one that should be used for reference. I pick a certain page and try to learn that particular entry for that day. It can broaden your general knowledge greatly.
