This is the canonical book for engineers seeking to understand the effects of lightning on aircraft as well as practical measures for protecting aircraft against lightning effects.

The first edition was originally published in 1979. It was expanded upon in 1990 with inputs from Rod Perala, President of EMA. The second edition, published in 2004, added new materials and techniques.

The book here on Amazon is JUST the 1979 edition. It is out of date and the pictures are illegible. This is really just a hardcopy version of the PDF available on the web for free. The most recent version is self-published and can only be accessed by contacting the authors or EMA. It is much more professional and has received significant updates.

EMA also uses the book as a thank-you gift to our clients from time to time.

Mediocre introduction to music theory

I bought this as a short and sweet introduction to music theory. Often, because of the K.I.S.S. principle, shorter books can be less confusing than much longer ones. Not so in this case. A clearer book could have been written in the same number of pages.

Although this did help me learn some of the basics, it left me with far too many unanswered questions. I still don't understand what it means to play a song in a particular key. There are so many notes in a song, how do I know which one(s) determines the key of the song? Although David Harp discusses playing in different keys, he never actually explains how you tell what key the song is being played in.

I haven't read either of them yet, but based on the ratings you may be better off with Edly's Music Theory for Practical People or The Complete Idiot's Guide to Music Theory.

Update: Since originally writing this review I have read "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Music Theory", and it is a far better--but far longer--book than this one. It also comes with an ear training CD. I now have no unanswered questions. (The note that a song ends on is usually the key of the song because the song resolves itself on that note. Also, the music notation tells you what key the song is in.) To help learn to read sheet music, I very highly recommend these sheet music flashcards.

This book helped me understand music theory, thereby improving my music playing and appreciation. The factor that I enjoyed the most about this book is how it can appeal to beginners as well as advanced musicians. He explains everything very clearly. I enjoyed reading this book.

Relevant and Realistic

My wife and I both liked this book. It is short and to the point, but full of helpful and relevant
information. It is also quite realistic and not based in fantasy like so many other
books of this nature. We have read a lot of books on female domination, but
this one really spoke to us and was the closest to what we are looking for in our
own relationship.

It has good information, but is very brief. It's a good starting road map to point you in the direction of what to research, but the info is very basic. I know everyone is different, and it's all about communication with your partner, and this will give you things to talk about. Not much of a how-to book, though.

Save Your 99 cents

This short story took about 5 minutes to read. It's a prequel to Debbie Macomber's new book. She should have done with Jennifer Weiner did with Swim and The Next Best Thing, have the short story free to get people excited for the main novel. This short story that I spent 99 cents on left me feeling ripped off and the probablity of me buying the book that goes with this story is very low.

Also, I don't think that by not reading this story you are at a disadvantage. I would bet that this whole story will be summarized in The Inn at Rose Harbor.

I was rather disappointed in this book

I was rather disappointed in this book. I am an engineer and very interested in medieval technology. This book lacks any in-depth technical details and only superficially discusses the more rigorous engineering details of this subject. It gives a very broad and far reaching overview with a fair amount of historical context and discusses some interesting chronological and etiologic issues, but is devoid of practical details. If you are planning to build a medieval structure using period methods, this book is of little help.

Readable, informative and very interesting

Ever wonder how all of those heavy stone parts were hoisted into the ceilings of a cathedral? Curios how the arch forms were installed in large ancient aqueducts? These and so many more building methods of the ancient and medieval world are explored and presented in practical, easily understood sections in this excellent scholarly volume.
