Explains numbing asininities.

Well, I read this ageless but topical book of wisdom five years ago and it made a great impression on me and how to evaluate the state of the world today. Today's war for civilization made me read it again...to see if there is hope in the face of bombings, beheadings, appeasements of numbing asininity we read about in the daily news. It's thesis stays with me when I vote, when I evaluate bureacratic silliness, politician's worth,and my choice of where to live and do business. This book explains how a civilization can devolve or evolve through the decisions, actions, or indecison, inaction of those public servants who are not elected, but appointed.

Frederick Mosher's thesis is about how the bulk of governmental decisions and actions are determined and influenced by the background, associations and values of educated-or-not, un-elected, administrative officials.

The author reminds us that our government,and democracy should be *by" the people, as well as of and for the people; evidenced by our country's early hope to be governed by all the people such as in the New England Town meetings.

We can see how our direct democratic participation is first delegated to popularly elected representatives who then select and delegate powers to other officers. As the administrative tasks of government begin to outnumber the elective officers, a third step away from directly participative democracy is taken with the designation of un-elected, un-removable administrators who are chosen merely on criteria of social class, family, general competence and special skills.

Mr Mosher makes it clear that in every developed country in the world the vast majority of public officers are in this last class. They have specialized skills and competences that the elected officials do not usually possess, and it is obvious that this third tier of public officers make decisions of great significance for all the people.

The book examines just how this disparate assembly of the elite specialists and professionals exposes a glaring need for generalists, which, if included, these generalists could thus beget a strong bureaucracy which instead of being a threat to democracy, becomes its greatest pillar... if sufficiently represented.In other words the educational process through which professionals are produced needs broadened, more humanizing education programs.

The author's conclusion discusses how the public officer's decisions usually will require some kind of interpretation of the public and public interest! This will depend principally upon the system of education. There is (or there should be) high ethical content in most significant public decisions. A basic standard of justice for value-laden decisions demands fairness and charity! Ultimately the possibilities of a truly democratic public service would depend upon individuals from all walks of life progressing to higher education, and of course, would depend upon the bias or un-biased orientation they receive in universities!

This book can be a valuable reference for the way to sanely administer a growing and productive society. It answered my questions about how democracy could really, finally work despite the broad range of voter's mentalities, apathies, knowledge and bias'. Thanks for the glimmer of hope.

About the Author
Chris LoPresti is the Founder of TouchPoints, a consumer data technology company that helps brands connect with their community. LoPresti is also the founder and chairman of ELIS Inc., a nonprofit focused on promoting STEM education and supporting the next generation of entrepreneurs. In addition to his work with next-gen doers at ELIS Inc., LoPresti is a member of the Thousand Network, a coach at The Future Project, a member of the NationSwell Council, and a proud Eagle Scout. Do yourself a favor - read this book.

I bought this book expecting it to be the same old, same old entrepreneur book. Not the case at all. Learning from successful entrepreneurs from a wide range of fields opened my eyes to mistakes I have made and didn’t know it, and mistakes I was bound to make had I not read the book. Such a great read I could not put it down. I wish I had been able to read it sooner in life. INSIGHTS is a must read for not only entrepreneurs, but all people in the business world.

Fabulous!

Outstanding... This is a fun and insightful look at entrepreneurship from 101 different angles. It's an anthology for seasoned and aspiring entrepreneurs alike. Many of the contributors have written their own books on the subject yet offer new insights here, especially when strung together seamlessly by Mr. LoPresti. I wish I had read this before I launched my own startup, which is no longer in business... I'm looking forward to the hardcopy version since this would make a great gift.

This is a really wonderful Atlas. I would have expected to pay a great deal more for a volume of this quality. I was a Navy Quartermaster and a lot of our charts were not of this good quality. What a bargain.

Although glossy and pretty, this Atlas might have been published in the 1950s...nothing about the style and choices has been updated from a large Atlas I owned as a child. I am not complaining about the data and the map details, I have no doubt that they are current. I object to the editorial choices, which seem ridiculous in the internet age. Sure, if you have the internet, you probably don't need an atlas. But about 100 percent of Amazon customers have some access to the internet. IMO, a "new concise" Atlas should not bother including every small town in the world. Nor should it include roads except in remote places. I want a handy, big-picture reference especially pertaining to areas of the world that are frequently in the news like the Middle East, which is poorly covered. The area of the Suez Canal is tiny, for example. Everywhere, the maps are crammed full of names of minor places and roads such that the big geographic and political features are obscured. There is only one map that shows the entire Black Sea and that is a map that also shows all of Russia so the Black Sea is about one inch from East to West. If you want to know the exact location of the Ukranian village of your ancestors, this is something to save for the internet. And, especially, the roads to get you there are not needed on this map, where they could not possibly be adequate. What I want is to get a big look of the Black Sea within its political context of neighbors and geography to help me make sense of the news and history. I don't want to find some small town and how to get there.

I concede that the design of a reference work like this is determined by a large number of choices and judgments and nothing will satisfy everyone. But generally I think that publishers are misguided in thinking everybody always wants a roadmap. Totally unsatisfying to me, and I am returning it.

Disappointed

My bad. Artists think that multimedia means the combining of visual and other elements to enhance the product of an artist’s vision. I didn’t understand that to communication people, this enhancing element was not part of the definition. As a result a perfectly fine book, aimed at communicators, disappointed me.

After an introduction that gives a quick course in understanding computers and explaining how to plan a project, there are chapters on the elements of design, page layout, user interface design and web design. This is followed by a discussion of static media, including text, graphics and photography. The time-based media section includes recording formats and device settings, audio production, video production and time based editing. There are lots of images and sidebars. The multimedia device used for many of the illustrations was a television news broadcast. Some of the chapters were written by guest authors other than Costello.

All of the information is presented at a basic, easily understandable level, aimed at people who have almost no familiarity with particular aspects of media. No one should expect that they will learn how to design a web page based on the information here. Instead, when a reader encounters a reference to one of the subjects covered here, he will understand it in general terms. That’s just fine for someone entering the communications field.

I particularly enjoyed the chapter on typography. Even though I was familiar with the structure of fonts, and even once ran a printing plant, I learned some new things about fonts. Unfortunately nothing told me how to select the best font to tell a story.

The material here is primarily descriptive, without reference to how the use of a particular media could optimize the telling of a story, and certainly not how use of one media could reinforce or enhance the story told by another media.

The book mentions a companion web site but when I tried to access it, I was unsuccessful. A representative of the publisher told me it had not yet been established.
