Hands down one of the best books breaking down the different componets of the cultural & ritualistic ties of antiquity. Diop's theory of the polarization of the Southern and Northern hemispheres of the earth along the continent of Asia acting as a "zone of confluence" is a precise outlining for the different practices of social organization as they existed in the past. He goes into the studies of many 17th century socialist such as JJ Bachofen, Lewis H. Morgan, and Friedrich Engels to show the many discrepancies created out of preassumption of the characteristics of people who they never tooken in to study, such as the many societies existing within the interior of Africa.

It seems the main theory that he wishes to debunk is that of an parallel development of social organization existing between the hemispheres. This logically could not have existed due to the many difficulties a people living in two different climates varying from an abundance of resources to the disperation of a scarcity would have practicing the same modes of production and consumption. As an natural habitat causes for an particular adjustment to the environment, two modes of polar disciplines arise, in the southern hemisphere the practice of agriculture develops as the main line of life maintience and wealth, while in the northern hemisphere the practice of horticulture takes a preeminence as the providing occupation. This book is deep and complex. One has to read it to grasp and understand. Anyway, Diop essentially divides the world into two cradles - the Northern (patriarchal in character), and Southern (Black and matriarchal). He clearly demonstrates that matriarchy could only be found in Black populations, specifically in Africa, or other places subject to Black influence. European and Asiatic societies have a patriarchal regime because of the demanding nomadic lifestyle in the Eurasian steppes. The sedentary life of Blacks is what fueled great respect for women...the Black woman being the inventor of agriculture. Children often got their names from the mother's lineage. He clearly argues his facts by explaining dowry, fire worship, cremation, amazonism, etc. He gives thorough examples throughout.
This is not just another feel-good book from a zealous Afrocentrist. This is true scholarship! I am sure all readers will be convinced when they finish reading it. Islam, colonization, and Christianity have truely changed the Black world in terms of its matriarchal character. We should respect our women. In European and Asian history, you will never find anything resembling the armed Sudanese Kandake, the Angolan Nzinga, the Egyptian Hatshetsup and Tiye,...the list is endless. Perhaps it's matriarchy that fueled our ancient societies to become world powers in our glory days. We can only imagine. Can Africa ever really gain what it's lost? That's the question. In a way, I feel that Diop asks the same question.

A highly recommended first step for Pentateuch study

While certainly profitable to others who do not fit this category, "The Torah Story: An Apprenticeship on the Pentateuch" is a textbook written with the undergraduate Bible student in mind. Its purpose is not to give an in-depth, verse by verse explanation of the Five Books of Moses (for which one should seek a commentary), but is meant instead to give the reader an understanding of how the Torah functions as a self-contained, five-part instructional story which lays a foundation for the rest of the Hebrew Bible (the Christian Old Testament) as well as the New Testament. It is written from the perspective of one who is a Christian and who is committed to the Torah as scripture (see p. 13). While this perspective should be obvious, a reading of this textbook will also show that Schnittjer is not afraid to raise difficult issues that come with studying the Torah, even issues he has no intention of answering for the student, nor necessarily always believing there to be such answers at our disposal ("For an apprentice of the scriptures to become skilled at her or his craft, it is necessary to know when to say, 'I do not know.'" p. 68).

As the back-cover description admits, "The Torah Story" only briefly touches on certain matters of debate such as dating and authorship (matters which the Torah apprentice will certainly encounter with further study). Rather, its chief concern is helping the student simply read the text as we have it. For this reason, the first chapter serves not only as an introduction to the textbook, but also as a sort of crash-course in reading biblical narrative. The apprentice will become familiar with older literary terms (cause to effect, climax, contrast, foreshadowing, etc.), be introduced to entirely new ones ("narralogic"), as well as come to appreciate better the relationship which exists (or is meant to exist) between the story and the reader.

After this and a second chapter which introduces the Torah itself, "The Torah Story" is divided into five parts, each part corresponding with the five books which make up the Pentateuch. Part One is comprised of 8 chapters which discuss the book of Genesis, Part Two is 5 chapters on Exodus, Part Three is 4 chapters on Leviticus, Part Four is 4 chapters on Numbers, and Part Five is 5 chapters on Deuteronomy. Following these, a concluding twenty-ninth chapter reintroduces the Torah by giving a broad summary of the entire story (having examined the trees, the forest is then looked at for what it is worth). This chapter also looks at the way the Torah is not only used by later biblical writers, but how it shapes the entire biblical story. In essence, here we have demonstrated how both the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament can only be properly understood when placed within the context of the Torah story.

Each chapter assists the reader by opening with a "Getting Started" box including focus questions and terms which relate to that chapter, and an outline of the portion of the biblical text the chapter is concerned with. Each chapter also closes with an "Interactive Workshop" consisting of a chapter summary and questions for the beginning and advanced student, as well as suggested research project ideas and a select bibliography for those who wish to take "the next step" toward a deeper study of the things only touched on in the chapter. In addition, certain chapters also provide opportunity for the student to compare stories and themes found within the Torah with similar stories and themes found in our own culture, particularly in film. For example, following a look at the perspective of God's creation as found in Genesis 1, the reader is invited to compare this perspective with that found in the 1997 film "Contact" (see pp. 63, 71). These aides and opportunities for further study are what set "The Torah Story" apart from other introductions to the Pentateuch, making it a textbook ideal for today's undergraduate class and individual student.

Great Read

I have read the Bible five times straight through and find myself reading it again thanks to Dr. Schnittjer's excellent textbook. Written for the Bible scholar, it is readable by the average student and will inspire those readers to dig into the Torah like no other book I have read. It is honest in its approach and thoroughly enjoyable. It will challenge and stretch the reader. The exercises at the end of each chapter and the guide points throughout each chapter stimulate learning and comprehension. This is a must read for anyone interested in the foundational chapters of the Bible. If you are not an apprentice when you begin this book, you will be by the time you have finished it.

This book is simply amazing. It is in a textbook format, but that makes it an easy read even if you are not taking an Old Testament History class. Dr. Schnittjer is well versed in OT History and Hebrew, so this book was a perfect fit for him, and he geared it to his students and their peers, not his colleagues. This book is very helpful!

This book was over the top confusing & horrible. Treasure used to be a good writer, but she fell off with this book! It was rushed & it doesn't make sense, the ending was stupid as hell & I won't be reading part 2.

I really enjoyed this book. I'm such a fan of Treasure's. I loved the relationship between Nori & Mare, its true he belonged to someone else, but Nori had all of him without a title. He was in a relationship with another chick but Nori never played second to her since the day they met. I loved how he was there for her even when she didn't want him to. Halo, she's definitely a true friend. Nori's dad, the ish he said to her was crazy. The whole Cassie & Kadeem situation, had a feeling them meeting wasn't random. Can't believe Mare backtracked smh. Yo, that ending.... Wish Nori would've trusted her gut instinct. That ending makes the want for part two so intense!! BTW, all the songs & quotes you used for each chapter was life!!

I liked the flow of the story as well as the characters. Halo was the true definition of a friend. Nori was dealt a bad hand from the beginning and it just got worse. Amare started out as the perfect guy, but he showed his true colors when he backtracked and missed his daughter's birth. The ending is what got me confused. It could only be 1 of 2 people. Either way you look at it, it looks like part 2 will be a tear jerker. I'm hoping it's neither of them, but it HAS to be one of them. Hope part 2 is around the corner. I knew James was a traitor.

Good read for a lifestyle change

Very easy read on flexible dieting. Makes you understand the material and there is no shaming. Sometimes with lifestyle books you can feel guilty reading them as it points out the many wrongs you do, but this is a book that simply states it's purpose and shows it wants to help you.

Definitely a great read and will help understand how you can better your body as a lifestyle and not a temporary change

A brilliant book I wish I had months ago

Finally, it all makes sense! As a chef and clean eater, I could never understand why it was such a struggle keeping the extra weight off. The author does a fantastic job at explaining flexible dieting and the importance of adjusting macros to find what works for your body. The book is detailed in explanations yet easy to read and follow, with a delightful tone. A must have book for the New Year.

A simple easy to follow way to live. There are no difficult scientific explanations but at the same time Betsy manages to lay out the how's and why's in a way we can ALL understand and apply. It's a "it's not rocket science" kinda book written in a friendly voice that will appeal to anyone interested in figuring out the whole food/weight thing.

Ok, so maybe I was amped up about this read cause of the reviews but to me it was just ok... I mean his story was very original well atleast I haven't read it before BUT it was up and down as in sometimes I wanted to keep reading and other times I just wanted to put the book down. I'm a huge wahida fan so i had more expectations, but to each it's own- it was ok I'm not in a rush to read part 2...

Trust No Man by Cash explores the world of snitches, whores, and gang-bangers. Close your eyes and you will see these images in many of our backyards, or places we have visited or where we grew up. Terrance aka Youngblood is the main character in this urban fiction story. We are given his story in detail from growing up in the hood to him finding where he fits in; in the scheme of things. Youngblood hangs around old heads or OGs trying to pick up their tales of the street when they used to slang and never got caught up. Youngblood is a strong-minded individual like many of the young men of today; however, he gets caught up in trying to come up and becomes a stick-up kid.

Plotting against rival bangers and drug dealers Youngblood is trying to make his name ring bells in the street. Hooking up with different women and flossing his wealth will only lead him in two places--dead or in jail. After doing an extensive bid, Youngblood fathers multiple children, gets shot numerous times, and becomes a well-known killer. Will Youngblood turn his life around before it is too late, or have the streets already claimed his soul?

The beginning of this story was very typical of all urban fiction books, but it had a twinge of something different and held me captive, anticipating what would happen next. When I got to the end of the book, I was saddened and a little confused. With the help of additional editing, this story could have flowed much smoother. I recommend this book to readers of urban lit.

Money Power Respect...

Sometimes the dirt you do in the streets comes back to haunt you in the worse way. The streets can welcome you and desert you in the same breath. Terrance (a.k.a. Youngblood) knew only one thing...the streets. Youngblood was a stick-up kid who lived by the code of the streets: Loyalty and Respect. But circumstances change Youngblood's mindset when he's put in situations involving matters of the heart. Baby mama drama is no stranger to Youngblood, and the women he chooses to deal with could cost him his chances of stacking his paper. After a stint in prison, Youngblood needs to rebuild his empire, but will the choices he makes cost him his chance of being on top?

Shan is Youngblood's baby mother, and the rules of the street is that Shan is suppose to hold her man down no matter what the situation is and stay away from her man's friends. When Youngblood is sentenced to a short stint in prison, Shan does the exact opposite. Her legs stay open like a 24 hour store, and the ultimate betrayal comes when she sleeps with her man's partner and friend and is now carrying his child. A chain reaction causes Shan to reevaluate the choices she makes. Will Shan straighten up and be a mother to her child, or will she reap what she sows and suffer the consequences?

Lonnie was Youngblood's partner and mentor. Lonnie bought Youngblood in the game and schooled him as a big brother. When Youngblood was sixteen years old, Lonnie put him on, and their bond was thicker than thieves. Loyalty was the code they lived by. Lonnie and Youngblood looked out for each other, did dirt together and through it all, their relationship remain true. When Youngblood is released from prison, Lonnie introduces him back into the only life he is accustomed to and what is guaranteed to bring in money fast. But when Youngblood accepts side deals from others outside of their circle, could those choices cause there relationship to be tested?

Trust No Man was a book I definitely couldn't put down. The struggles this young man endured related to the many challenges we all face in life. Do you choose the straight and narrow life, or do you chose the life that can get you enemies, jail time, and or even killed? Youngblood was no nonsense, but through it all he wanted to be involved in his children's life. I think that Cash is right on point with the portrayal of the struggles that a lot of young African-American women and men go through. The choices you make and the enemies you create by doing dirt can cause you a lot heartache and pain in your life. The characters were ones that everyone could relate to, either on a personal level or just from different situations and struggles we have all encountered one time or another. I cannot wait to read Trust No Man Part 2.

Not much about "the secret life".

The book gives a very interesting insight into the powerplay that goes on inside governments and between nations and how they pulled it off to raid Dotcom - NZ and FBI. It is NOT flattering. It is a great story how Dotcom chooses to fight back, and I look forward to seeing where all this ends.
Kiwis will find it very interesting to read about how their government work.

However it also became clear to me that Dotcom found a "get rich fast -scheme" after the initial launch of Megaupload. Kim is a clever guy - there is no doubt in my mind he knew he was living off Hollywoods money. The question was rather; could he get away with it within the limits of the law. This is where the battle started. And what a battle! They say you should choose your enemies carefully - and Dotcom made quite a choice.

I actually don't think the book is well written. It seems to be leaning on existing interviews with Dotcom and on a massive note taking from court hearings - and I get the feeling the book was written in a hurry. There are some sentences that reappear in the book in multiple chapters and some misspellings that should have been avoided. I get annoyed - you may not be.

The book could have been great had it been Dotcom himself telling the story - like Bransons "Loosing my Virginity". Kim could add both humor and indignation. And the book is written too soon. I think as the case unfolds there will be much much more to add to the story.

Secrets, spies and lies.

With the subtitle Spies, Lies and the War for the Internet you would expect intriguing revelations and David Fisher doesn’t disappoint. We are all mixed-up human beings, but none more so than Kim Dotcom. Here the many sides of this complex character are presented, with fascinating details of his fortunes and misfortunes.

Fisher is a senior reporter for the Auckland Herald, New Zealand, and he makes it clear that this is not an authorised biography. It is, however, based on many personal interviews with the subject, as well as extensive research.

The saga uncovers Kim’s early life (born Kim Schmitz) as a lonely child in Germany, his early forays into the internet, his extraordinary knowledge, his close friends and associates – all brilliant computer whizzes – the story of why he came to New Zealand and the police raids on his home on January 20 2012. It follows the subsequent court cases and fall out with politicians and people in high places.

Fisher has been accused of giving undue reverence to a criminal. Dotcom is a flawed character and he is shown here in many guises, both good and bad. I think Fisher has done a great job of trying to present the story as he sees it, and he has tried to depict all sides of the story.

It is a tale of much more than the life of one man. We have politicians, the New Zealand Government, the American FBI and more. It shows cracks in the systems, why the FBI were involved in the raids, and much, much more.

Our opinions are often shaped by the media and the outcome is a very shallow view of events. This book is trying to give a rounded story to fill in the gaps. If you are interested in knowing more about the workings of Governments and men in high places, reading this book might give you more than you bargained for.

This book changed my perception of Kim Dotcom.

A must read for all new zealanders! This book revealed the dark side of USA and NZ government. It totally changed my perception of Kim Dotcom.
