Great Project Book
By William Bagley
I learned a lot about electronics from this book and found all the parts for a few projects at Radio Shack. Since the book supports Radio Shack products and visa versa, you are confident to find what you need there and save a lot of hunting around. The projects are low cost and relatively goof proof. A lot of things use a Timer IC. I recommend the book for those who want an entry level learning about electronics as a hobby. It takes some of the mystique out of circuits. One word of advice, the author is already very minimalist in what he says, he wants to keep it simple and make every word count. I found it was good to not skip anything he says on a project and to read the intro, unless you are already adept at electronics and are just fishing for good ideas.

Warning!

Once you buy this book, you'll be buying it for the rest of your life! HAHAHA!! You'll buy it for people that you'll come across in life that are trying to learn electronics. I fist bought this book when it was first published in 1983 when I was 19 years old. Since then, I've bought the book for friends at least 5 times.

When it comes to learning electronics from absolute scratch, from a book format, there is nothing better than this book! I still remember how excited I was to build a working example circuit demonstrating the basic operation of a transistor! Today I design and build robotics equipment. =)

Forrest Mims is the worlds best science writer! Very right brain optimized! He reminds me of Michael Faraday in that he is very visual in the way he thinks.

Getting started in electronics.
By Slobrain
Good Book, I used this book back in 1987 to learn electronics besides the college course I had taken that had a basic electronics course for AC and heating repair. The information helped me to work on AC units and then I used the knowledge to build guitar pedals and then fix guitar amps and finally building guitar amps.

Let the Sea Make a Noise...: A History of the North Pacific from Magellan to MacArthur, by Walter A. McDougall

In this exceptionally innovative work, Walter McDougall projects on a large screen four hundred years of exciting voyages of discovery, pioneering feats, engineering marvels, political plots and business chicanery, racial clashes and brutal wars. It is a chronicle complete with little-known facts and turning points, but always focused on the remarkable people at the center of events, among them the America-loving Japanese ambassador to Washington on the eve of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Russian builder of the Trans-Siberian Railway, and a Hawaiian queen during the first period of Western competition for the islands.

Let the Sea Make a Noise . . . is a gripping account of the rise and fall of the empires in the last, vast, unexplored corner of the habitable earth -- an area occupying one-sixth of the globe. There is no other book that covers these same subjects in this wealth of detail and with such chronological scope.

From Publishers Weekly
McDougall chronicles the cultural, racial, economic and military confrontations of the British, Spaniards, Hawaiians and Chinese in the North Pacific since the 16th century. He pays special attention to the intertwined histories of the Americans, Russians and Japanese who made the North Pacific an arena for power politics. A history professor at the University of Pennsylvania (and author of the Pulitzer-winning The Heavens and the Earth ), McDougall is a first-rate scholar and a marvelous writer. Here he periodically interrupts his headlong narrative to present the minutes of seminars attended by ghosts of the North Pacific past: Father Junipero Serra, a Spanish missionary; Kaahumanu, consort of Hawaiian King Kamehameha; William Seward, Lincoln's secretary of state; Count Sergey Witte, prime minister to Russia's Nicholas II; and Saito Hirosi, pre-Pearl Harbor Japanese ambassador to Washington. These well-informed, opinionated wraiths discuss and argue with one another (and with the author) about such matters as the theory of the mongrelization of races and the extraordinary profusion of atrocities committed by the Japanese military in WW II. This is an impressive study, breathtaking in scope, entertainingly informative and thought-provoking. Photos. $25,000 ad/promo; BOMC and QPB alternates.

From Library Journal
McDougall (history, Univ. of Pennsylvania) has given us a stimulating analysis of the interaction of the races and cultures of the North Pacific over the past four centuries. Tracing developments in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Alaska, Russia, Japan, Korea, China, Hawaii, and other north Pacific islands, he examines the history, societies, economics, and geopolitics of the region within the context of three eras defined by technology: "Of Sail and Muscle," "Of Steam and Rails," and "Internal Combustion." His imaginative and original approach includes bringing to life prominent figures from different countries and eras to help interpret the important events in which they participated. A delight to read; highly recommeded.

From Kirkus Reviews
Generation-spanning tales of the North Pacific from a Pulitzer-winning historian who's also a gifted storyteller. Given the breadth of the claim he's staked on a vast area that extends along a coastal arc from Baja California to China, it's no wonder that McDougall (...The Heavens and the Earth, 1985) chose a Michener-like format for his absorbing if episodic saga. It's the author's elegantly effective conceit that the favorite consort of Hawaii's King Kamehameha has summoned him and others to pass judgment on regional events over a span of nearly four centuries. Among the heavenly guests are Hiresi Saito (Japan's ambassador to the US during the 1930's), Junipero Serra (the Spanish monk whose missions opened Alta California to white settlement), William Henry Seward (Lincoln's secretary of state), and Count Sergey Witte (Tsar Nicholas II's prime minister). With more than a dozen breaks for spirited colloquies with his phantom collaborators, McDougall offers short-take accounts of historical milestones ranging in time from the opening of new sea lanes during the late 16th century through the 1950 outbreak of hostilities between North and South Korea. Covered along the way are oceangoing voyages of discovery (by Captain Cook et al.); development of the fur trade; gold rushes; earthquakes (in Tokyo as well as San Francisco); the impact of transport technologies (steamships, railroads, aircraft); the US purchase of Alaska; imperial Japan's conflicts with Russia; WW II; and more. While offbeat, the author's framework allows him to focus on questions he deems most consequential and to examine them from several standpoints. The discontinuous chronicle addresses substantive issues throughout, concluding, among other matters, that over the years demographic forces have proved far stronger than governmental imperatives. Perceptive, coherent perspectives--mounted in a flashy and accessible text--on a once-remote domain that's a world unto itself. (Thirty-two pages of maps and photos--not seen). -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Entertaining as well as informative
By Winifred
This is a wonderfully entertaining as well as informative book. I already knew bits and pieces of this history, but McDougall puts it together in a very different way by focusing on the struggle to dominate the north Pacific. I was especially unaware of Russia and Hawaii's roles in the area, and I enjoyed his musings on the complexity of the various power struggles and the errors often committed by the players.

Waves of details and facts tempered with speculation
By loce_the_wizard
"Let the Sea Make a Noise" forges historical scholarship with insightful notions about the realms encompassing the north Pacific Ocean. The author, Walter A. McDougall, spent untold hours researching and organizing minutia then interweaving vast history replete with sensory details; human and political failings, dreams, and successes; meteorological and geographic facts; and overlooked, obscure bits of history.

Consequently, the book itself is somewhat overwhelming for it is nearly impossible to absorb this level of detail or maintain a clear understanding of the myriad relationships and ideologies the author presents.

I suppose having too much detail is better than not enough in any book of this sort, and Mr. McDougall is never shy about throwing in what may be a touch of conjecture. One cannot really know what some of the many people profiled here might have been thinking, but ultimately the scope of the book prevails, and one must admire the tenacity and effort funneled in to this book.

Be prepared to invest some time reading this history but be forewarned that you may have to put the book down from time to time to let the facts and information swamp you like a big wave---and I found I wasn't always that eager to jump back in for more.

A Glorious Journey Through Time
By S. Roberts
The best books are those so rich in character and content that you can revisit them time and again, certain that you will discover new layers of enjoyment and insight with each reading. Walter A. McDougall's "Let the Sea Make a Noise... : A History of the North Pacific from Magellan to MacArthur" is just such a book. How fortunate we are that Perennial has newly released this volume in paperback!

McDougall takes the reader on a glorious (though sometimes harrowing) journey through time. He has succeeded in combining painstaking research and carefully considered commentary with a wonderfully woven and witty narrative. This gripping tale of the North Pacific is a genuine page-turner: a rare treat on the menu of today's history books!

Contrary to the lone opinion of a Washington State Amazon reader, rest assured that "Let the Sea Make a Noise..." is a balanced and scholarly presentation of the complexities of international relations. Written in the early 1990s (when Japan's economic prominence in the midst of Soviet collapse was the source of widespread international concern), McDougall's insights in "Let the Sea Make a Noise..." are often profoundly visionary and always poignant and honest. He has done an outstanding job of crafting an entertaining, yet intricate examination of the motivating forces that have shaped a wondrous region of our planet.

Once you have enjoyed this book, be sure to seek out McDougall's just-published "Freedom Just Around the Corner: A New American History: 1585-1828".

From Publishers Weekly
A fictional version of the author serves as the narrator of Berlinski's uneven first novel, a thriller set in Thailand. Mischa Berlinski, a reporter who's moved to northern Thailand to be with his schoolteacher girlfriend, Rachel, hears from his friend Josh about the suicide of Martiya van der Leun, an American anthropologist, in a Thai jail, where she was serving 50 years for murder. As Mischa begins to investigate Martiya's life and supposed crimes, he becomes increasingly obsessed with the woman. The complications that arise have the potential to be riveting, but the chatty narrative voice takes too many irrelevant detours to build much suspense. Still, Berlinski, who has been a journalist in Thailand, vividly portrays the exotic setting and brings depth and nuance to his depictions of the Thais. Buried within the excess verbiage is a lean, interesting tale about, among many other things, the differences between modern and tribal cultures. (Mar.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
Mischa Berlinski originally intended to write an account of the real-life Lisu tribe of Thailand, but held scant interest in the project until he decided to fictionalize the natives and turned his research into a novel. In this readable and clever debut, told almost entirely in backstory, Berlinski explores the problems inherent in trying to assume the perspective of another person or culture and the enduring conflict between faith and science. While he treats each perspective with genuine empathy, he refuses to take sides. Critics had a couple of complaints—a lagging secondary plot and a few descriptions with a textbook feel—but dismissed them as minor. They unanimously praised Berlinski’s wit, style, and intelligence in this atmospheric "novel that never fails to fascinate" (Minneapolis Star Tribune).

From Booklist
This novel is an amalgam of murder mystery, historical novel, psychological thriller, and even travelogue, but its multiple dimensions are not a drawback. The premise is solid and creative: a young American freelance writer accompanies his girlfriend to Thailand, where, from a person he'd known before, he is offered a tantalizing story to pursue, "as a gift." It seems a woman anthropologist had been imprisoned in Thailand for murder and subsequently killed herself during her incarceration. The narrator takes up the story, assumes the challenge, and goes in search of the answers to two overriding questions: Whom did the woman murder and why? Berlinski is obviously fascinated by the history of twentieth-century anthropology and equally eager to share his knowledge of tribal customs in rural Thailand. The reader learns a great deal about fieldwork but significantly less about the effortless integration of fact into fiction. In this, Berlinski is somewhat clumsy. Brad Hooper

Excellent Book
By Amazon Customer
Well-researched and excellently paced novel. I was fascinated by the level of detail and found the non-judgmental tone of the author refreshing. The novel ended up being an anthropological study of 3 separate tribes--the fictional Dyalo (who appear to be based on the Lisu tribe the novelist studied extensively--look on [...]), American Protestant missionaries, and the curious tribe that lives in figurative ivory towers who spend their lives studying other tribes. The author seems to suggest that the universal tragedy that serves as the basis for the murder mystery aspect of the novel is the result not merely a simplistic clash between East and West, but one that can happen to any peoples who do not share the same world view or to anyone in any culture subject to common human emotions.

Terrific read, and highly recommended. I look forward to Mr. Berlinksi's future literary output--maybe something set in Italy, or perhaps involving Haitian voodoo cults?

A Unique and Fascinating Literary Hybrid
By B. Case
"Fieldwork," by Mischa Berlinski, is a fascinating literary hybrid--part mystery novel, part fictionalized memoir, and part well-research (but completely fictionalized) cultural anthropology. The writing is outstanding--easy and unadorned with lyrical touches that appear out of nowhere to delight and beguile. There is also a surprising amount of subtle humor that pops up unexpectedly throughout. The characters are spot-on perfect--so utterly authentic that it's almost impossible to believe the author when he admits in the end notes that: "None of this stuff happened to anyone."

I found this book absorbing, unique, and fascinating in just about every respect. What interested me most, was not the plot so much as it was the chance to immerse myself in a multitude of exotic new worlds--worlds that I would never have experienced on my own. In this book, readers are invited inside many diverse worlds, in particular: the culture of evangelical Christian missionaries working with the hill tribes of Northern Thailand, the culture of worldwide present-day expatriates in Thailand, the culture of 1980s UC Berkeley Graduate School of Anthropology students, the culture of the fictional Thailand hill tribe of the Dyalos, and a number of other minor cultural experiences both historical and contemporary along the way.

For me, the entire reading experience was like one entertaining intellectual armchair adventure ride!

Briefly, the book tells the story of a female UC Berkeley-trained anthropologist, who murdered an evangelical Christian missionary around 1990 in the wilds of Northern Thailand. Before the murder, the anthropologist had been studying and living with a single Dyalo hill tribe for 15 years. The man she murdered spoke Dyalo like a native. He loved the Dyalo as if they were his own family because he was raised alongside them in China near the Thai border. As an infant and small child, his missionary parents raised him in an American-style home built with enormous difficulty in an isolated valley populated primarily by Dyalo tribesmen. The family had to flee to Thailand from their "Eden Valley" home in the 1950s when China expelled all foreigners. The missionary family moved to Northern Thailand. Eventually the anthropologist and the missionary crossed paths, and the murder took place. The anthropologist was tried and convicted for her crime. She served 15 years of a 50-year sentence in a Thai prison before taking her own life. An American expatriate freelance journalist living in present-day Thailand investigates the whole story and relates his findings to us. In a twist that may make some purists cringe, the author names his fictional narrator after himself. Thus, the novel takes on the quality of a memoir, albeit, a totally fictional one.

Obviously, this is a book about clashing cultural values. To the author's great credit, he treats both sides with enormous humanity and understanding.

Little by little over the course of this detailed novel, we learn about the precise circumstances surrounding the murder. In the end, all the physical pieces come together. But knowing the exact circumstances of the murder, however satisfying they are to know, is not what this book is all about. Once readers finishes this book, they will start pondering all the diverse global political, economic, social, psychological, religious, and ecological issues that the work stirs up. Somewhere in the middle of all those issues, each reader will come to terms with the underlying motivations behind the murder. So the plot is just the enticing thread that leads us toward and into a lot of major contemporary social issues.

You have to love reading all three parts of this chimera--the novel, the memoir, and the pseudo-nonfiction cultural anthropology--or this book will fail to please you. At first, it wasn't easy getting used to reading this hybrid. For me, it was a wholly different type of reading experience, and I actually needed to adjust my normal reading pattern in order get into the swing of things, and start enjoying the experience. Perhaps I'm not like other readers, but I tend to read novels, memoirs, and nonfiction works in different ways. I started out reading this book as if it were a novel, and that was wrong for me. I ended up reading this book as if I were reading nonfiction and that seemed to work better. If your reading tastes are broad and happily encompass novels, memoirs, and nonfiction works of cultural anthropology, then you'll probably love this book as much as I did. If you don't enjoy one of those three types of reading, or if you want the book to be only one type and not all three, then you'll probably have difficulty getting into and through this work...or, if you do, you'll probably find significant fault with the work as a whole. My advice: expect a hybrid, read it as a hybrid, and you will probably not be disappointed.

I can easily see why this unique novel caught the attention of nationwide book critics and was a finalist for the 2007 National Book Award. I will certainly recommend it to many (but not all), of my book-loving friends. I look forward to more books by this talented new author. Personally, I hope he sticks to this unique hybrid format, but if he branches out into new territory next time, I'll happily tag along. He's certainly made it to my "must-read" list.

Best book I've read this year and last
By Laoshi
So many qualities that usually exist in books that I love I found in Fieldwork: stories about foreign cultures, stories about expats, has something to say about life and life in a foreign country (espec. non-western country), I can learn something about another subject - the writer is not just a novelist but has expertise in another field (i.e. anthropology, linguistics), interesting and realistic characters, decent prose and a good story that holds one's attention from beginning to end, a story that doesn't fall apart at the end like so many books written by first-time writers, an unpredictable ending.

I am not sure you can really appreciate this book if you haven't lived for an extended time in Asia, Africa or South America. The writer really captures what it is like to be an expat or a former expat. Throughout the book I kept on saying yes, yes, that's it, that is exactly what it's like. The longer you stay in a foreign country, the less you feel you understand about that culture. The difficulty in returning home - no one cares about your stories and finding yourself struggling to fit in a society where all people care about it how big their flat screen tv is or how much they have in their 401K.

I loved the stuff about Malinowski, anthropology and linguistics. I found it informative and it really added to the story and the understanding of Martiya and Mischa.

I really look forward to reading more from this writer. I hope he continues with the same subject matter. There aren't enough books about Americans interactions with foreign cultures. I have to say I had a good laugh at his description of all the old white American males and their young Thai wives. I could say more about this but I don't want to offend anyone. But totally spot on!!!
