Lint, by Steve Aylett

Jeff Lint was author of some of the strangest and most inventive satirical SF of the twentieth century. He transcended genre in classics such as Jelly Result and The Stupid Conversation, becoming a cult figure and pariah. Like his contemporary Philip K. Dick, he was blithely ahead of his time. Aylett follows Lint through his Beat days; his immersion in pulp SF, psychedelia and resentment; his disastrous scripts for Star Trek and Patton; the controversies of The Caterer comic and the scariest kids' cartoon ever aired; and his belated Hollywood success in the 1990s. It was a career haunted by death, including the undetected death of his agent, the suspicious death of his rival Herzog, and the unshakable 'Lint is dead' rumors, which persisted even after his death.

From Publishers Weekly
Informed SF readers, particularly Philip K. Dick fans, will enjoy British author Aylett's laugh-out-loud (mock) biography of (fictitious) cult writer Jeff Lint, though the dense prose, rife with odd word juxtapositions, can be daunting. Aylett (Slaughtermatic) traces his subject's strange life from Lint's early days in the 1940s writing for the pulps (including Astounding, Baffling and Maximum Tentacles) to the rumors of his untimely death and beyond. Lint unsuccessfully dabbled in almost every genre imaginable: short stories, novels (Jelly Result), comics (The Caterer), cartoons and Hollywood screenplays (Nose Furnace). Lint's script for a never-made Star Trek episode, notable for its wild creativity and unfilmable special effects, led Gene Roddenberry to exclaim, "This isn't prose, it's gnats in formation!" Aylett doesn't shrink from providing revealing details of Lint's feud with rival Cameo Herzog, nor of Lint's habit of cross-dressing when he delivered his manuscripts, which he always did in person. Illustrations of such items as Lint jacket art and a page from his Star Trek script add to the fun.

From Booklist
Aylett's steady output of ribald, unpredictably plotted novels has earned him a reputation as one of sf's true mavericks. Here he brings his madcap energy to the satirical "biography" of an eccentric author of antic sf, Jeff Lint. Aylett traces Lint's peripatetic and occasionally violent career from his early days pawning short fiction off on Amazing Stories under his "pen name"--Isaac Asimov--to his psychedelic years churning out formula fiction in the sixties to his eventual demise in the nineties. Along the way, Lint arouses suspicion when both his agent and his chief rival die under mysterious circumstances, and he himself becomes the object of "Lint is dead" rumors. Aylett's multidimensional account of Lint's livelihood includes snapshots of the book covers of such titles as I Blame Ferns and Doomed but Confident, an exhaustive bibliography, and an addendum of choice Lint quotations; for instance, "When the abyss gazes into you, bill it." Readers with the taste for offbeat humor of the Douglas Adams, genre-spoofing variety should savor Aylett's latest. Carl Hays

Exceptional Book!
By Bradley
This book is a godsend and has saved me from financial and mental collapse.

When I was young, my father would force me watch old recordings of Lint's Catty and the Major whenever I misbehaved. After developing a tolerance to the emotional damage, Catty and the Major became my favorite program and I began participating in nightly massacres of my neighbor's pets to incur my father's wrath. So he discovered what I was up to and threw out all the Catty and the Major tapes.

After that, I was always staying home from school to vomit to the tune of all the withdrawal symptoms that accompany a life without Catty and the Major. I started reading horribly written novelizations of Catty and the Major (my father was fine with it as long as Lint didn't do the writing) in order to ease my pain. Then I graduated to consorting with shady characters covered in fudge and traveling to nefarious used bookstores built on minefields in order to get to get my hands on another Lint paperback. And this dangerous lifestyle has continued to this day...

...until the release of this book. Contained within its pages is everything about Jeff Lint's books (and comics and plays and movies) that I've ever wanted to know. Steve Aylett has condensed Lint's work into one marvelous book, leaving in all the good bits, eliminating the tedious moments, and making my unhealthy activities a thing of the past.

I will never leave my room again.

Aylett versus the Real World
By martyn pedler
Steve Aylett's earlier writing created worlds like the guns-blazing city of Beerlight (seen in 'Slaughtermatic'), where crime is the only remaining art... and more recently Accomplice, in which demons with "wet anvil heads" play out a farce of corruption for one idiot's soul (in 'Only An Alligator'). With his latest, Aylett finally turns his attention to our so-called `real' world: a biography of cult science fiction author Jeff Lint.

Like Philip K. Dick, but without any of the lingering credibility, Lint shows the kind of obscure career that inspires an obsessive following. Aylett traces Lint's early satiric sci-fi like 'Jelly Result' and 'I Blame Ferns' and the subsequent literary run-ins with Burroughs, Kerouac, and other big names of the counterculture. (In fact, Lint may have only first been published due to his pen name `Isaac Asimov.') Lint's forays into other media included his attempt at two-fisted comic book action in 'The Caterer', a hilariously misjudged and never-filmed script for the original Star Trek, and the inexplicably terrifying children's show, 'Catty and the Major'.

Aylett and Lint share the same "claymore principle of creation": pack more ideas per page then seem possible, cover your ears, detonate, and see how many impact on the reader. Lint is an incredibly dense read. It never sits still, but you'll want to read it slowly, for fear of missing another perfect epigram or odd non-sequitur. (There's a handy appendix of Lint quotations in the back, in case you missed them the first time round, and want to confuse guests at your next dinner party.)

Lint said that "...satire was like scrubbing tombstones with a toothbrush, but honourable nevertheless." Luckily, Aylett balances his pyrotechnic wordplay with a genuine sense of affection. In the end, it's the story of a man whose works touched many - even if they're not sure how, or why, or what it all meant - and the joys and frustrations of dedicated fans still today interpreting the ripples that Lint left behind.

Good Aylett but leaves room for improvement
By R. Barnes
I noticed that parts of Jeff Lint's life mirrored that of William S. Burroughs, Hunter S. Thompson, and Philip K. Dick. If I knew about the lives of more famous authors, I am sure I would have noticed their lives reflected in Aylett's Lint as well. The book is full of Aylettisms (he shows no sign of running out of them or using second class material). Most of the anectotes about Jeff Lint are somewhere beyond zany, ridiculous and pathetic. The book is not as funny as Bigot Hall, and not as ingenious as Crime Studio (but it comes close).

In terms of positive issues, the creation of Lint fan-websites is just beautiful. Also, the block of text from the Star Trek script is priceless. Best of all is the realization of several panels of The Caterer. I think that Aylett should team up with a comic illustrator and do the actual comic in its full 9 issue run. Goodness knows it would be better than 99% of comics out there today.

In terms of the negative issues, the main one is that in Lint we glimps what could have been. All of the verbal and written quotes are in Aylettese regardless of the whether the quote is from Lint, his manager, book publishers, or critics. In some places this works. However, I can't help thinking that the book could have been twice as funny if the only person who acted and spoke in Aylettese was Jeff Lint. If the other characters were portrayed as doing and saying things that real people in the real world would have done in reaction to a real Jeff Lint, the contrast would have really brought more punch to the material. I think it would have been a much more "wild" book if it had mundane human reactions to Lint's insanity. With this change, the book could have passed as a real biography rather than as an obvious Aylett escapade. If he rewrites it with typical biographical quotes from publishers, managers, etc. I would buy the book a second time.

Adaptation and Appropriation (The New Critical Idiom), by Julie Sanders

From the apparently simple adaptation of a text into film, theatre or a new literary work, to the more complex appropriation of style or meaning, it is arguable that all texts are somehow connected to a network of existing texts and art forms. In this new edition Adaptation and Appropriation explores:

  • multiple definitions and practices of adaptation and appropriation
  • the cultural and aesthetic politics behind the impulse to adapt
  • the global and local dimensions of adaptation
  • the impact of new digital technologies on ideas of making, originality and customization
  • diverse ways in which contemporary literature, theatre, television and film adapt, revise and reimagine other works of art
  • the impact on adaptation and appropriation of theoretical movements, including structuralism, post-structuralism, postcolonialism, postmodernism, feminism and gender studies
  • the appropriation across time and across cultures of specific canonical texts, by Shakespeare, Dickens, and others, but also of literary archetypes such as myth or fairy tale.

Ranging across genres and harnessing concepts from fields as diverse as musicology and the natural sciences, this volume brings clarity to the complex debates around adaptation and appropriation, offering a much-needed resource for those studying literature, film, media or culture.

Great Ideas!
By Kate Schultz
This book is packed with great recipes you can use for drinking water-healthful and delicious. The photographs are beautiful and inspired me to try more recipes. There are so many interesting fruit and herb combinations which have unique and addictive tastes. I bought a nice glass pitcher to show off the drinks. My monthly artist group loved the Squeeze of Citrus. I bought the book for a sister's birthday present and she really likes it too. Highly recommend if you're bored with plain water and/or you want to make your water healthier. You will need a very good blender, a juicer for citrus, and a very fine large metal sieve.

What a terrific book. No more need to buy expensive designer waters or sodas. The recipes in Cool Waters are so easy to follow and taste great. If you are trying to diet, they are all healthy and satisfying. I love Apio Rey, which is just as good as Dr. Brown's Cel Ray soda but without the calories and cost. Check it out.

Misleading Title
By C. Parton
Since Amazon recommended this book to purchase with a pitcher with built-in infuser, I expected this to be a book with flavor boosters for water. This is a book of juices diluted with water. Most of the ingredients are run through a blender and strained. Another thing to beware of is the exotic ingredients, you be the judge: rose water, lemongrass. blood oranges, fresh lychees, orange blossom water. fresh spearmint, ground ancho chile, fresh lavender leaves, fresh peppermint leaves, golden kiwis, coconut water, aloe vera leaf or juice, carambola, red Swiss chard, purple kale, fresh lemon balm leaves, goji berries, fresh lavender leaves, dried chamomile flowers, tamarind paste, dried hibiscus flowers, vanilla bean, juniper berries, star anise, Balinese long peppers, kaffir lime leaf, saffron threads, shiso leaves, fresh yuzu or bottled, Charentais melon, Thai basil leaves....seriously. Each recipe is written nicely and they do try to explain what these ingredients are. They also recommend foods to pair it with.

"Love doesn't warn you when it hits. It's like a drug. You're on an awesome high; but when you try to wean yourself off, knowing that in the long run you'll be better off without it, you start to get withdrawal symptoms. So you go back for more, hoping it'll make you feel the same way it did when you first experienced it. Christian was my drug; he was my addiction."

Anushka Lamba, a strong minded British Indian woman wants to shape her destiny as director of her own life. Except, she constantly battles with her inner self and her loving but traditional Hindu parents, who believe she is too 'westernised' and not 'Indian' enough.

When Anu arrives at university, half way across the country, to study a degree that's far from her parents choice and their wavering eye - she's exposed to freedom and independence in abundance. She embarks on a secret relationship with fellow student Chris, whom she desperately wants to introduce and welcome into her family. Her dilemmas and decisions take her on a roller coaster ride - a tangled web of culture, identity, betrayal, confusion, love, hatred and heartache - in ways she could never have imagined.

Is Anu strong enough to face the obstacles that stand in her way or will she give up midway and live a lesser life, leaving things to the mercy of destiny?

Colour of my Heart takes the reader on a warm-hearted and emotional journey from Anu's present, deep into her past, as she strives to assert her own happiness and discover her own identity - without losing touch with her proud Indian roots and her parents aspirations.

An absolute riveting read ....I could not put this book down ....It had me gripped right from the start which is unusual for me ! It's about the divide between love and culture which is something as a westerner I know nothing about as my decisions are something I take for granted . . I can only urge you to buy this book and see for yourself . It was both sad , happy and an eye opener ....easy and compelling reading . I was actually sad to finish it and eagerly await book number two by Kavita Comar. ....

One of the greatest books I've read
By Amazon Customer
One of the greatest books I've read. Anu was so easy to relate to from the start. Many times I had my own flashbacks of growing up in my Indian parents' home. I love how confident Anu is with taking control of her life. This whole book felt like a long story told from your best friend- the exciting good times, bad times, stressful times, and resolutions! Highly recommended!!

Being a girl from traditional Indian family myself, I felt so close to the character of Anu at times . Every time I took a break , my mind kept wondering what will happen next in Anu's life as if it was my own :-) a great read . Would definitely recommend to read

A Reluctant Bride (Amish of Birch Creek), by Kathleen Fuller

Sadie Schrock swore that she would never marry. All of her other Amish friends could court and marry; she was content to manage the family business and eventually take it over when her parents were ready to retire. But all of that changes when a reckless driver kills both of her parents and seriously injures her younger sister. With mounting hospital bills adding to the pile of debt her parents left behind, Sadie is left with no choice: she must marry. And not just any man-the man who saw her at her weakest and walked away. Aden knows that what his brother did to Sadie years ago was inexcusable. And every day since that incident, Aden has lived with guilt for not intervening sooner. When he is faced with the chance to protect Sadie once again, he can't let her down-even if it means living with the scorn of the woman he loves for the rest of his life.

Great start to a new series
By Donna Repsher
I received an ARC of this title in exchange for an honest review and here it is. Kathleen Fuller has done it again--written yet another Amish novel that was simply impossible to put down, and I think this is her best one yet.

At age 16, Sadie Schrock is carrying bags of ice to her family's store when she is waylaid by a drunken Solomon Troyer, the bishop's eldest son, who drags her into a cornfield and accosts her. His younger brother, Aden, shows up but does nothing to help her and leaves. Luckily, she manages to knee him and get away, but she never tells a soul about it, fearing that no one will believe her. Flash forward 6 years. Sadie is still terrified of Sol, and still angry at Aden. She avoids all social occasions except for church. When tragedy strikes, killing her parents and seriously injuring her sister, it leaves Sadie, the eldest daughter, to deal with the aftermath alone.

Adding to her trauma, when she realizes that her father was deeply in debt, and that the hospital and rehab bills for her sister are piling up, she forces herself to ask Bishop Troyer for financial aid. He's a harsh, greedy man, and refuses to loan her money. He has a different solution, he wants Sadie to marry Sol--her worst nightmare. Aden comes to her rescue, offering to marry her instead, lying to his father and saying they'd been secretly courting, and Sadie is forced to accept what she considers the lesser of two evils.

What follows is a gripping tale that deals with tough issues, some of which are rarely seen in this genre--domestic abuse, alcoholism, greed, subterfuge, forgiveness, kindness, honesty and faith, and Ms. Fuller tackles them with great skill, sensitivity and grace. This new series is off to a great start.

A Reluctant Bride - Great read!
By Sherry Greene
Kathleen Fuller has created another great and very interesting Amish book in A Reluctant Bride.

Abuse, both mental and physical, mental anguish, lies, secrets, deceitfulness by a church leader and many other issues which we don’t normally associate with the Amish lifestyle can be found in this book.

Lives are totally turned upside-down due to circumstances, not of their own doing, but created by others, family members included.

Will Sadie and Aden be able to overcome the horrors that have changed their lives, to accept love, peace, and contentment through God’s grace?

This inspirational book is one you won’t want to put down until you have finished reading the entire book. I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves to read this genre of books.

I was given the privilege of reviewing this book by Thomas Nelson publishers for my honest review.

Deeper, darker themes than I expected
By EpicFehlReader
Not your average Amish life novel! Not that I've read a ton of them. In fact, most I've read have been those I've been sent for review from publishers or ones my mother requested I read. But yeah, of the small stack I've covered, this one has one of the more unique plots I've come across, and incorporates some darker themes not typically addressed in this type of novel.

Let me start off by warning sensitive readers that this book does open with a scene of sexual assault. Not full-on rape, but there is extremely aggressive kissing from a guy that won't take no for an answer.

Sadie Schrock is an Amish teen running an errand for her parents (who own the local general store) one day when she is accosted by Bishop Emmanuel Troyer's eldest son, Sol. Sol is clearly drunk and keeps trying to make advances toward Sadie, which understandably makes her extremely uncomfortable. Sol's younger brother Adan walks up on the scene, senses Sol is up to something bad, but quickly becomes too frightened to fight off his older brother, Instead he chooses to run off, leaving Sadie to fend for herself. Sadie gets yanked into a nearby cornfield where Sol tries to carry out a forceful gropefest, until Sadie finds opportunity to bite & kick her way to being free of him.

Six years later, everyone is in their 20s now. Sol is still a hot-tempered, sexually frustrated alcoholic, Adan's still guilt ridden over his cowardice, and Sadie is still struggling with emotional scars from the attack. Her parents want her to marry but Sadie cannot bring herself to be at ease around any men. Her mother basically forces her into attending a party but Sadie is floored when she finds out the party is being held at the Troyer home. Sadie manages to make a brief appearance before the anxiety gets to be too much and she has to go home. Shortly after the night of the party, Sadie's parents are killed in a traffic accident. Sadie, being the eldest, is left to take over the running of the store and family finances, which she comes to discover are waaaay in the red. When she goes to the bishop to ask for financial help from the community funds, his bright idea is for her to marry Sol, but the reader comes to find out that the bishop has his own less than honorable intentions for wanting the marriage. Seeing this as his moment to remedy past wrongs, Adan steps up and says Sadie already promised herself to him. Sadie obviously has her reasons to hate either match, but with limited choices, agrees to marry Adan. But how does one make it work with someone who so painfully wronged her when she most needed help?

I went into this pretty much expecting your typical Amish romance but was pleasantly surprised at how much deeper it turned out to be. This story tackles such topics as the power a sincere apology can have; finding strength to go against what you've been taught your entire life when you realize those teachings are actually based in ignorance or prejudice; struggles with alcoholism and why some people are driven to self medicate emotional wounds; and allowing people who have wronged you the opportunity to change (in turn allowing yourself to let go of the hateful feelings towards them). The story also looks at suspicious behavior among church officials, which brings up the topic of what do we do when the people we put on pedestals let us down?

The romance unfolds pretty much the way you would expect, it was more the other themes that led me to give this one a four star rating. I'd say if you've liked this type of story in the past and would like to try them again, but have maybe become burnt out by the same ol' plots being churned out in recent years, this might be a good one to try out as a refresher.

POTENTIAL TRIGGER WARNING: As I mentioned above, this book does open with a scene of sexual assault. Also, two of the characters later on in the story reveal that they were victims of child abuse.

FTC DISCLAIMER: TNZ Fiction Guild provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The opinions above are entirely my own.
