A coding standard for every Java programmer.

A good coding standard should focus on advice that encourages the correct and consistent application of a language. The more widely-adopted a standard is, the more benefit. No less than the Java Language Specification acknowledges this by listing a limited set of naming and usage practices. While the JLS falls far short of establishing a complete coding standard, the naming conventions it established have alone been of great benefit to the Java community. The "Elements of Java Style" nicely fills the gap left by the JLS in other areas, although it too falls a little short in places--thus the 4 star rating instead of 5.
I strongly suggest "Effective Java" by Joshua Bloch as a companion to this book. Whereas the 108 rules in this book focus on style, format and many pearls of practical advice, "Effective Java" provides an excellent set of 57 rules that go much deeper and tackle more advanced aspects of writing correct and consistent code. The two books complement each other well.
Of the 108 rules, the most glaring technical error is rule #99 which promotes the use of the flawed double-check synchronization pattern. Ignore this rule.
The 108 rules are divided into six chapters as follows:
4 General Principles: While I would have added a few, the four here are quite sound.
4 Formatting Conventions: Programmers tend to get weird about code format. After long enough you realize any reasonable and consistently adhered to standard is fine, so just use this well-considered set.
23 Naming Conventions: These are of great benefit as they resolve the ambiguities left by the JLS. I especially like rule #12, "Join the vowel generation".
35 Documentation Conventions: These very well-reasoned conventions will help to produce useful documentation as well as to eliminate unnecessary or excessively wordy documentation. The rules target both internal and external documentation as emphasize the different goals of each.
37 Programming Conventions: While there is a lot of good advice in this section, it also contains some of the weakest advice. Rule #74 on enumerations is flawed ("Effective Java" provides better coverage on how to use enumeration classes). The section on using assertions (4 rules) doesn't mention the important rule to only use tests with no side effects. It will also need to be modified for the assertion facility being added in J2SE 1.4. The section on threads and synchronization is the weakest (7 rules) as it contains rule #99 as well as some weak and incomplete advice in rules #97 and #98.
5 Packaging Conventions: This section contains some good advice not just on how to organize your classes into packages, but also on how to design stable packages.
Particularly on points of style and format, individuals will find aspects of any coding standard (at least any standard they didn't author) that they disagree with. Having written several coding standards in a variety of languages, I too have some rules I would have written differently. However, the benefit of a language-wide coding standard is that if everyone follows it, then everyone benefits from that shared agreement.
My company has adopted "The Elements of Java Style" as its coding standard with as few amendments as possible. You and your company should too.

How often does $10 get you a usefull programming book?

It is rare that you can spend about $10 on a computer book and have it be a valuable addition to my library. This book is small (I was kind of shocked when it first arrived) but it has a lot of usefull information in it. Valuable tips provided in a very concise presentation.
If every Java developer followed the rules in this book, code would be easier to read, understand, and maintain. A must for those who develope Java in teams.

Kewl best practices, not just punctuation rules

In addition to all the usual rules about proper capitalization, indentation, comment styles and such, there are actually 42 pages on good Java design and coding practices (defining subclasses that can be used wherever their superclass can be used, always constructing objects in a valid state, exceptions, assertions, really good rules for synchronization, lazy instantiation, etc.) There is also a very short chapter on packaging. There's a lot of forehead-slappers in this very portable book.

I understand this book was a mainstay of the 1964 Barry Goldwater campaign which Ronald Reagan supported. WOW!!! - eye opening stuff about who funded the Kinsey report, the American Law Institute, etc - and why things are changing - often for the worse. This book teaches you what they don't teach you at Harvard/Stanford. Every serious student of history and law should read this book - or remain ignorant of the real forces at play at high levels in society. I also recommend "Original Intent" by David Barton and books by Dr Cleon Skousen (see [...] Law schools are dominated by pide piper puppets who spout the propaganda they are paid to teach - the official party line. The plain truth is submerged with piles of hogwash and historical revision and post-Christian jurisprudence.

Buyer Beware!

I'm surprised with all of these 5 star reviews that there isn't one negative review. While this book is great at showing off lighting techniques (And why I gave it 2 instead of 1 star)... This book is also a giant ad for Kubota actions. Buying Kevin Kubota's dashboard, lightroom presets, and photoshop actions (also available at his website) end up costing you hundreds of additional hours to achieve the look of the images in this book.

So, if you already are waist deep in Kubota's tools, fantastic, buy this book. You'll soar.

If you are new to photography, or just looking for an affordable path to make your photos better, I'd avoid this.. As, you are being led down a very expensive path from the author.

A decent book with some interesting ideas

I bought this book twice - first time as a gift for a friend of mine who helped me with photography when I was starting and recently again to show some of my colleagues from photo business how to make a decent studio setups with little effort.

I like this book as it is very descriptive and has a lot of info about used equipment for specific shoots. I'm however a bit confused about its particular targeted crowd - new photogs will probably have problems finding exactly same equipment to use (SB-800 anyone?) and older, more experience photogs will already have their own stuff, probably of different brand and/or type and they generally know most of these setups. I took one star for that one - I know it is an older edition, but still.

Still, there are some really cool samples and ideas within this book so I guess $20 isn't much for it, especially since a decent lens is most likely 100x more expensive anyway...

I removed a second star due to annoying and really cheap way that Mr. Kubota promotes his product throughout the whole book. Pretty much ANY photo he took he sent through Photoshop and used some of his filters (which he, of course, would be more than happy to sell to you), pretty much telling you how you can get a good result without software. Boulderdash.

This shameless self-promotion is pitiful and totally misleading. While I think that Mr. Kubota has some really cool photos in his portfolio and is certainly a man with good ideas, this books tarnishes that reputation somewhat.

After all is said and done, my recommendation is that you look for a different book with similar material. This one is somewhat old and although it has some decent setups and ideas you can find similar material presented elsewhere and with less shameless self-promotion.

Disappointing

I was very disappointed with this book. Kubotas first item in this "lighting notebook" is a backlit pair of girls. How are they lit? With flashes? With reflectors? Nope... sunlight through a window. Thank you for this extremely obvious and useless example. People buying lighting books are generally more advanced shooters. This example was and is completely unnecessary.

Which ended up being the tone of this book. It ramps up quickly into extremely expensive lighting examples. There are very few examples for the mid-level photographer. Kubotas uses a price indicator and when half of his examples run over $1000, it's pretty obvious that the book is worthless for anyone who owns that much lighting gear.

While a few of the examples are useful, more than half are not. You're better off searching youtube and collecting videos from a variety of sources. Two stars at most.
