Kroeger is Great

Three years ago, I had taken no classes at all in formal linguistics, though I had studied classical Greek, Hebrew, and some modern Korean. Then I took two 3 credit grammar classes in three months from Dr. Kroeger followed by another class called Advanced Grammatical Analysis. He used a prepublication version of this book in that class. I found his book very easy to follow and very interesting. Of course, I had the advantage of being in a class of only 10 students with almost unlimited access to Dr. Kroeger when I had questions. Even without him in person, I think his concern for students and ability to provide clear explanations without being wordy comes through in this book. I liked the fact that he provides examples from a wide range of languages and many of the examples are entertaining, particularly the "durian" examples. Your mind will be stretched by some truly bizarre structures (from an English perspective) particularly near the end of the book. It's about as fun as a textbook can be.

Well written book. The descriptions of the definitions are simple and clear to understand and the appropriate language examples are well displayed. This book would be a great help for the students who are learning basic principles and issues on Syntax and for the field workers who are going to analyse their own language data.

Useful book for those new to goto scopes

If you have a goto scope it's very useful. I have a Celestron NexStar goto telescope, and have bought a book specific to NexStar scopes, and I still found this one helpful, especially on alighment.

Very helpful book

I recently purchased a Celestron StarSeeker telescope (basically a NexStar80) so wanted to read more about computerized telescopes. Michael Covington's book is very good. He starts by saying "Welcome to amateur astronomy". The first part of the book then goes on to discuss telescopes in general, such as the different types (ie, refractors, reflectors and catadioptric) and much very helpful general information about observational astronomy. Things like celestial coordinates, how a telescope works, etc. Too much to put in this review but I found the information extremely helpful. The second section is about astrophotography including simple ways to do astrophotography without a lot of expensive equipment. This author also has a book on Astrophotography which I haven't read. He refers to it several times in this section of this book. The last section describes in quite a bit of detail the operation of 3 computerized telescopes, the Meade LX200, Celestron NexStar 5 and 8 and two Meade telescopes with Autostar, the ETX 90 and the LX 90. All of these telescopes are now outdated as both Meade and Celestron have newer models. However, what is said in this section would apply to the newer models to a large extent. Overall I enjoyed reading this book and obtained a lot of useful information and recommendations to start my budding career in amateur photography. One further note; there is another book by Michael Swanson that deals with just the Celestron NexStar telescopes. I have this book also but haven't finished reading it. If you are just interested in computerized telescopes in general, I would recommend the one in this review. If you have or are interested in a Celestron, then I would suggest the Michael Swanson book; actually I would recommend both.

Mr. Bernstein considers music ranging from Hindu ragas through Mozart and Ravel, to Copland, suggesting a worldwide, innate musical grammar. Folk music, pop songs, symphonies, modal, tonal, atonal, well-tempered and ill-tempered works all find a place in these discussions. Each, Mr. Bernstein suggests, has roots in a universal language central to all artistic creation. Using certain linguistic analogies, he explores the ways in which this language developed and can be understood as an aesthetic surface. Drawing on his insights as a master composer and conductor, Mr. Bernstein also explores what music means below the surface: the symbols and metaphors which exist in every musical piece, of whatever sort. And, finally, Mr. Bernstein analyzes twentieth century crises in the music of Schoenberg and Stravinsky, finding even here a transformation of all that has gone before, as part of the poetry of expression, through its roots in the earth of human experience.

These talks, written and delivered when Leonard Bernstein was Charles Eliot Norton Professor of Poetry at Harvard University, are the newest of the author's literary achievements. In addition to a distinguished career as conductor, pianist, and composer, Mr. Bernstein is the recipient of many television Emmys for the scripts of his Young People's Concerts, Omnibus programs, and others, and is the author of The Infinite Variety of Music and The Joy of Music, for which he received the Christopher Award.

Norton Lectures

Lenny scores again with this insightful book based on the Norton lectures he gave at Harvard College. He was a graduate of Harvard and studied with Walter Piston among others. Together with Noel Chomsky, Bernstein has made music understandable to the masses. His lectures show a very detailed and careful analysis of musical structures and the nature of poetic vagueness and stretching tonal limits. I would not only recommend this book, I would call it a necessity to the serious music student.

Unanswered Questions

There is little to say that has not already been said. These lectures are classic because of their multi-disciplinary focus. Simiply put, they are an integration of diverse material that fosters an awareness of the larger picture. In the final analysis all intellectual disciplnes are arbitrary in terms of lines drawn in the sand. Ultimately they all come together as a whole. The Norton Lectures underscore this theme as well as any piece written in the 20th century.

An Important Look At Airpower Theory Versus Real World Application

Great book which deconstructs some of the myths of airpower only strategies, particularly operation Odyssey Dawn--the Kosovo Air Campaign. Robert Gregory does a good job of explaining the necessity of ground forces for targeting in air campaigns and reshapes the coalition victory in Kosovo from one achieved through the air to one created by a combination of the threat of invasion and diplomatic efforts by the Russians.

Reading about Libyans coordinating time on target fire missions and realtime air support via Twitter is fascinating, if a bit frightening.
Overall, Clean Bombs is an incredibly useful and important book whether you're a strategist in a think tank, a policy maker, or historian.

An impressive read for serious students of conflict and conquest.

The amount of research involved in putting this book together is indeed mind-boggling. There is so much revealed about the wars in Kosovo and Libya that a reviewer must be too selective to give justice to this comprehensive treatment. My strongest reaction was to the follies of General Wes Clark who's decisions are dissected with great precision and contempt. This makes one wonder how he ever got four stars in the first place? Or a little deeper, why the Army's general officer selection process produced such an inept bungler? W ithout questioning the valor or loyalty of any concerned, there was a lot of parochialism in the fight, from the White House to the foxhole. I'm still not sure how to describe air power or even fire power for that matter, mainly because there are so many interactive systems required to bring destruction to a target. I have the feeling that unmanned aerial systems (aka drones) are in their infancy and may even be the key to winning wars of the future or bringing tyrants to their knees. We seem to dominate this technology at the moments, but that can't last forever either. An
impressive read for serious students. His views on the limitation of airpower are worth the price of this remarkable book. In short, the effectiveness of precision bombing without some corresponding effort on the ground is often over-stated by air power advocates.

To better understand this unruly new force in the political world, the authors use experiments that test how social media influence citizens deciding whether or not to participate. They show how different personality types react to social influences and identify which types of people are willing to participate at an early stage in a mobilization when there are few supporters or signals of viability. The authors argue that pluralism is the model of democracy that is emerging in the social media age--not the ordered, organized vision of early pluralists, but a chaotic, turbulent form of politics.

This book demonstrates how data science and experimentation with social data can provide a methodological toolkit for understanding, shaping, and perhaps even predicting the outcomes of this democratic turbulence.

chaotic pluralism

A very thought-provoking survey of new forms of low-cost collective action. The graceful collaboration of four authors with complementary backgrounds has produced a page-turning book. As they present internet-based collective action, it involves boundless scope of participants and absence of parties or organizations, which produces “chaotic pluralism”. It’s not yet clear how much more (or less) successful these new forms are in comparison with more traditional forms of participation outside internet. But any further study on the matter will have to start from this one.

Not an easy read

This text requires someone to have a long time to sit down and read it. information is a bit scattered but obviously the author is very capable. i will keep it in mind for the second year of my cards fellowship when i will have more time to read. For now this is a too detailed text that is not suitable in my opinion for busy first year cardiology fellows. there is no doubt though that the author had put a tremendous amount of work in what could perhaps be the most solid ECG textbook out there.
