"This is an excellent primer for those starting out in echocardiography and even those who have been doing it for a while. It's clearly written by someone who is near enough to the front end of their training that they remember what others find or may find difficult to understand. The text is extremely readable with useful illustrations and good quality images."

Excellent introductory book
By Nabil S. Zeineh
I'm a first year cardiology fellow. This book is just perfect as an introduction to echo. It is beautifully written, concise, and yet comprehensive. Extremely helpful. It is also small so you can use it as a quick reference while going through your first few months of echo. I just bought Feigenbaum's, but I think such an encyclopedic work can be tackled with much more confidence after a simpler read such as this one.

The Book of Night Women, by Marlon James

From the WINNER of the 2015 Man Booker Prize for A Brief History of Seven Killings

"An undeniable success.” — The New York Times Book Review

A true triumph of voice and storytelling, The Book of Night Women rings with both profound authenticity and a distinctly contemporary energy. It is the story of Lilith, born into slavery on a Jamaican sugar plantation at the end of the eighteenth century. Even at her birth, the slave women around her recognize a dark power that they- and she-will come to both revere and fear. The Night Women, as they call themselves, have long been plotting a slave revolt, and as Lilith comes of age they see her as the key to their plans. But when she begins to understand her own feelings, desires, and identity, Lilith starts to push at the edges of what is imaginable for the life of a slave woman, and risks becoming the conspiracy's weak link. But the real revelation of the book-the secret to the stirring imagery and insistent prose-is Marlon James himself, a young writer at once breathtakingly daring and wholly in command of his craft.

From Bookmarks Magazine
By exploring the ferociously cruel and dehumanizing practices of slavery in Jamaica, James adds a new chapter to the history of human bondage in the Americas -- "a story we may dare to think we already know" (New York Times Book Review). Powerful and eloquent, The Book of Night Women is narrated in a lilting Jamaican patois that at once underscores and eerily conflicts with the disturbing images of violence and degradation that James conjures. Though the novel is filled with familiar figures -- dissolute masters, jealous mistresses, house and field slaves -- James never lets them devolve into cliches or ciphers; instead, he creates convincingly human characters. A stunning testament to the dynamics of ultimate power and powerlessness, Night Women will keep readers up at night.

Review
“Both beautifully written and devastating…Writing in the spirit of Toni Morrison and Alice Walker but in a style all his own, James has conducted an experiment in how to write the unspeakable— even the unthinkable. And the results of that experiment are an undeniable success.”
— The New York Times Book Review

“The narrative voice is so assured and the descriptions so detailed and believable that one can’t help being engaged. This is a book to love. . . . The Book of Night Women is hard to pick up, even harder to put down . . . and it deserves to be read.”
— Chicago Tribune

“The Book of Night Women is a searing read, full of blood, tears, and the stench of misery. It’s barbaric and ancient, but also familiar in the ways that people, consumed by their differences and divisions, easily overlook all that binds them— the desire for independence, the right to a civilized life, and the need to give and receive love.”
— The Boston Globe

“The Book of Night Women is not merely a historical novel. It is a book as heavily peopled and dark as the night in this isolated and brutal place. It is a canticle of love and hate.”
— Los Angeles Times

“[Marlon James] has carved strong and compelling female figures out of the harsh landscape of nineteenth-century British-ruled Jamaica . . . The Book of Night Women’s most poignant feature is James’s sensitive and layered treatment of the unlikely romance that blossoms between Lilith and her Irish overseer.”
— The Miami Herald

“When a novel casts a powerful spell, I find myself trying to locate where it got hold of me. I knew The Book of Night Women had me when I started waking at night to worry about its characters. . . . Enslave one people and all are trapped. That familiar concept wears flesh and bone in The Book of Night Women. It stands in the wake of Toni Morrison’s transcendent slave literature, and it holds its own.”
— The Cleveland Plain- Dealer

“James has given us an epic novel of late-eighteenth-century West Indian slavery, complete with all its carnage and brutishness, but one that, like a Toni Morrison novel, whispers rather than shouts its horrors.”
—Time Out New York

“The narrative voice, with its idiosyncratic inflections and storytelling warmth, will pull you into this outsized, marvelous account . . . James re-creates a world and brushes it with an element of the fantastic, but the emotions he conveys are all too real and heartbreaking.”
— Flavorpill

“If you pick up The Book of Night Women, you might lose a little sleep. The second novel from Kingston native Marlon James will have you flipping pages, thirsty for more story, late into the night. . . . Well crafted and beautifully written...it will stay in your mind for weeks to come.”
—BookPage

“Darkly powerful.”
—The Washington Post

“The Book of Night Women is a slave narrative, a story of rebellion, and a testament to the human heart in conflict with itself. It is a book of rip and rhythm. Of violence and tenderness. Of the healing glance in all the hatred. It reads like Faulkner in another skin. It is a brave book. And like the best, and most dangerous, of stories, it seems as if it was just waiting to be told.”
—Colum McCann

“Marlon James has written an exquisite, haunting, and beautiful novel, impossible to resist. Like the best of literature, The Book of Night Women deserves to be passed down hand to hand, generation to generation.”
—Dinaw Mengestu

“With The Book of Night Women, Marlon James proves himself to be Jamaica’s answer to Junot Díaz, Edwidge Danticat, and Zadie Smith. James imbues his lively, energetic prose and unforgettable characters with a precocious wisdom about love, race, and history that none of us has ever seen before, but that feels alive, even definitive, as soon as we’ve read it.”
—Colin Channer, author of The Girl with the Golden Shoes

“Marlon James’s writing brings to mind early Toni Morrison, Jessica Hagedorn, and Gabriel García Márquez.”
— Kaylie Jones, author of A Soldier’s Daughter Never Cries

“Pile them up, a Marlon James character says repeatedly, and Marlon does just that. Pile them up: language, imagery, technique, imagination. All fresh, all exciting.”
—Chris Abani, author of The Virgin of Flames and GraceLand

“[An] epic narrative . . . as lyrical as it is hypnotic, even in the most violent passages.”
— The Independent

“A very nearly perfect work; an exquisite blend of form and content. . . . He bestows on the slave account authenticity and authority.”
— The Toronto Globe and Mail

Freedom Cometh With The Night
By Mocha Girl
Marlon James's latest novel, The Book of Night Women, opens with an immediate ominous vibe as a much-too-young 13 year-old child dies giving birth to a green-eyed daughter (Lilith) in a dirty, old shack. Merge this unfortunate beginning with the hard living and harder dying on a late 18th century Jamaican sugar cane plantation populated with slaves named after characters portrayed in Greek tragedies and James delivers an intense novel steeped in history, mystery, with a touch of mysticism.

At its core, this is a historical novel narrated by the slave, Lilith, and an unknown voice (which is revealed at the end) in heavy Jamaican patois and broken English. Orphaned at birth, she is raised by the barren and cruel concubine-of-sorts, Circe, and the insane, but caring, Tantalus. Puberty brings unwanted attention and in a brutal act of self-defense, the pretty Lilith is ostracized and placed in Homer's care at the "big house." Drama and more trouble ensue as Lilith vies for the master's attention and affection foregoing Homer's warnings and advice. Homer and Lilith's dialogue and experiences reveal the inter-/intra-relationships and the complex hierarchical strata and blended culture among slaves (house, field, Johnny-jumper), whites (British, French, Irish, Creole, owners, and overseers), Maroons, and Africans (Ashanti, Igbo, etc.). Homer, understanding the power of superstition, practices myal and inflicts an obeah-inspired method of control and revenge across the plantation.

The Night Women are a group led by Homer, a natural leader and planner, who has been plotting revenge and a multi-plantation rebellion with other like-minded women on neighboring estates. Befriending and adding Lilith to the group causes consternation amongst the other women, including two who share her haunting green-eyes indicating a sisterly bond spawned by the same paternity. The plot thickens and twists as Lilith makes difficult choices (and have some made for her) as she grows into womanhood, negotiates the plantation politics, and evaluates her allegiance to friends, her heart, and her master.

Be warned, the novel is written in native patois which might be a bit hard to follow initially until the reader finds cadence in the pages. The language and imagery at times are a bit vulgar and are painfully and tearfully graphic. Nonetheless, James has penned a novel that is sure to place on my "favorites" list for 2009 releases. This novel offers page-turning intrigue, unpredictable plot turns, and colorful characters with authentic voices to produce an award-worthy novel.

Good book but extremely graphic
By Emma P.
The book definitely keeps you on your toes. I personally stopped reading the book halfway through because it was no longer a joy to read. The plot gets more and more exciting as the story reads on but the book is extremely graphic. I understand the author's need to incorporate violence to give the reader perspective of the time period, but there was way too much horrific torture/violence I just no longer felt the desire to read it. I am honestly torn because the book is well written and I am dying to know what happens next, but it was hard to put the images of the book out of my mind (which I am sure is what the author wanted). If you don't mind violence or just want a good honest depiction of the daily horrors of slavery, the book is very well written.

Brutal, but Haunting
By T. Adlam
On a Jamaican sugar plantation, a slave girl is born--cursed, some would say, since she had bright green eyes, like a cat, and her mother didn't survive the birth. The girl is named Lilith and 'The Book of Night Women' is all about her (de)evolution--and what an evolution it is. (Actually, the overarching story ends up being bigger than the evolution of Lilith, but it wears that as a guise.)

First thing that needs disclosure is that this book is a difficult read, syntactically speaking, unless you're accustomed to Jamaican Patois--even if you are, there may still be some stumbling blocks--because the entire book is written in heavy dialect.

Second thing that needs disclosure is that this book is explicit in language and brutal in rendering. If you have a weak stomach when it comes to slavery and its ills (i.e. torture, r.a.p.e, lynching, wanton misbehaviour, so forth), you will heave, possibly vomit, and have nightmares. Thing is, while brutal, I have no doubt it was a near accurate rendering of the time period.

Without disclosing too much of the story, I'll say Marlon James is a bit of a magician. He was able to immerse me so utterly in the time period and setting that I had to put the book down a few times just to get my bearings and maintain my sanity. He also gave me every reason to despise a particular character (several actually), but made me shed a tear for that character near the end. It left me feeling as though I were the one with Stockholm syndrome. And the ending--it was a nice touch, very poignant, and provided a plausible explanation for some of the story's inconsistencies.

The book, however, wasn't without weakness, mainly with some characterizations. The primary characters were well crafted, but some of the secondary characters--specifically, several women in the 'night women' group, blended together. I found myself asking more often that I should, which one was she again? And the story builds slowly--it took several chapters before it took shape. Once that shape emerged, however, the book was difficult to put down.

There are no saintly characters--many are difficult to like at all--but they felt real; the prose and some references might be difficult for non-native speakers; and the story builds slowly (you'll need to actively will yourself to stick with it), but the story does turn out to be a compelling one. Overall, I'd selectively recommend this book because it's not for everyone, but it stayed with me for several days after I finished (and will likely stay with me for a lifetime).

Taiwan: A Travel Guide for Vegans., by Jesse Duffield

Vegans need and deserve our own travel guides, which only recommend vegan or vegan-friendly restaurants, and sites and activities which don't exploit animals. And Taiwan, the vegan heart of Asia, is the perfect country for the first guidebook. This edition covers all of Taipei's vegan and best vegetarian restaurants, listed as part of itineraries for the most popular attractions. Restaurant reviews all include a photograph, cuisine styles, price ranges, opening hours etc, and have clickable links to their websites and Happycow. Attraction listings include prices, hours etc like any other guidebook.

This is the world's first complete travel guide for vegans (as opposed to vegan business directories intended to supplement conventional travel guides). Taipei is divided up into three main 'outings' (based on the subway lines) with preparation, timing, weather and other considerations discussed for each.

Like most travel guides, this book includes all necessary travel practicalities, including transport, hotels, addresses, postal services, wifi, mobile phones, electricity and safety. It also discusses the history, politics and religions of Taiwan, and their promotion of vegetarianism or veganism.

LION HEAD MOUNTAIN
This centuries-old Buddhist retreat is a little off the path of these itineries, but is easily reached by public transport and makes a good final destination before flying out.

NOT COVERED IN THIS EDITION
Taichung, Tainan, or Kaohsiung, Central Mountain Range.

WHO FOR?
This book is recommended for first-time travellers to Taiwan who will be here for up to around ten days, however it could easily entertain travellers for up to two weeks. If you will have longer than this I recommend purchasing another guidebook or using online resources, buying a rail pass and travelling around Taiwan. New residents will probably find the book useful, however long-term residents who speak some Chinese will not learn much new.

VEGETARIANS
Most of Taipei's vegan restaurants are among the most popular for vegetarians and vegans alike, especially foreigners, since they serve a more international cuisine than most traditional vegetarian restaurants and noodle stalls. Vegetarians may find this book preferable to a conventional guidebook (most of whose recommended restaurants serve little if anything vegetarian) perhaps in combination with Happycow, however this book is written from a vegan perspective.

AUTHENTICITY
I have personally visited all destinations and eaten at all restaurants in this guide. This book contains no advertisements. I always pay for meals in full and would never accept any form of payment or incentives.

Easy to read, many useful tips, almost no skippable filler.
By Dave LaDelfa
Lots of useful, specific and relatively up-to-date (as of of this review in January 2016) advice on where to go, and what to avoid, in the northern third or so of the island. I especially appreciated notes like "Google maps has the location wrong; here's the right one."

I bought this in preparation for my first trip to Taiwan, so I can't testify to the accuracy, but feel like I got a lot more practical information out of this book than from the Lonely Planet and Rough Guide ones. For instance, knowing to avoid Shilin night market ("There are no longer any vegetarian food stalls") in favor of the Raohe Street one probably saved me an evening of my vacation, and that alone is worth more than the price of the book. I'm certainly a lot less stressed out over being able to go around and find agreeable meals with a very limited command of conversational Mandarin.

There's also a fairly thorough but not overly long history of the politics of Taiwan that will help to keep me from saying the wrong thing to people I meet and am hoping to impress. If you like to hike or bike-ride, there's a lot of stuff in here related to that too. I read it all even though that's not really my thing, so at least I know what I'm skipping out on.

A few side notes: Being a egg-and-milk vegetarian, not a vegan, this book is helpful in the sense that if a meal is "safe" for a vegan diner, then it's safe for me. On the other hand, when the author says of a given location, "there are no restaurants here," there might still be a place where I could get meatless food that might contain egg or some dairy. It would be helpful to people like me if those were indicated alongside, but I get the vegan ethos enough to understand how that might feel to some readers -- and probably to the author as well -- like a compromise of ethical principles, and that this book isn't the place for that. I'm happy to go hunting elsewhere for that information, e.g. Happy Cow. (Oh that someone would write a travel guide inclusive of both vegan and lacto-ovo-vegetarian practices with the same rigor and clarity that this author has!)

And couple minor quibbles with the way the pages layout on the Windows 8 (Metro) version of the Kindle App. Tables in grids seem to be a particular problem, and I wish the photos could be zoomed into, but these things might be unavoidable on the platform. I read somewhere that the author is intending to reformat this book to match his newer offering, Taipei in Four Days: A Travel Guide for Vegans, and look forward to a forthcoming edition perhaps addressing some of these issues, which didn't impede at all my ability to read the book. (Also, as I've not bought "Four Days," I can't speak to how much the two overlap, or whether you'd still need to buy that after reading this.)

The language is quite clear, and it seems to have been carefully proofread, as I spotted only a couple minor typos. This was also my first Kindle purchase. The experience of reading it more than once reminded me of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, and in my head I heard that deep voice from the radio version intoning lines like "The path is famous for its monkeys."

If this is defnitive, then I am the queen of england.
By Grant S. Robertson
How this book gets good reviews just boggles my mind. About the only good thing I can say about this book is that it gives a little bit of information that is not mentioned in the JavaDocs. The general pattern of every section goes about like this:

"X is an important new feature in JavaFX. We are going to tell you all about X. Here is an example which uses X."

[A several page example where X is used but is obfuscated pretty badly because most of the code uses advanced features of Java or JavaFX that have not even been mentioned yet and/or the example uses inconsistently named classes, objects, and variables and there are few comments.]

[An incredibly brief, paragraph or two, discussion of the example which rarely explains what is doing what and why. Essentially, this text usually just mentions that X was done or used without even telling you where. Every once in a while they will smuggle in some incredibly important fact buried in the middle of a paragraph, mentioned almost as an afterthought. It is usually some gotcha to watch out for that the creators of JavaFX probably don't want to advertize too loudly.]

"Now that you have mastered X we will tell you about Y."

Section heading

"Now that you know all about X it is time to tell you all about Y."

And the pattern repeats itself over and over.

The authors highly recommend that the reader have access to the JavaDocs while reading this book. I say the book is really nothing more than a list of things that you will need to look up in the JavaDocs and research online. The authors were obviously more concerned with filling space than actually explaining anything.

In one section they actually call the example "the motivating example" and then say to step through the example using the debugger of your IDE to figure out what it does, with absolutely NO explanation whatsoever. Then in each sub-section where the author mentions a JavaFX feature used in that example the author literally says, "You saw an example of this feature in the motivating example." or "This feature was used in the motivating example." and that is it. They actually EXPLAIN exactly nothing. They mention the feature, say it was in the example and move on. It is just a way of artificially wrapping a list of features up in lots of buffer text to fill up a book. And they filled up 600 pages with this kind of fluff. Yes, they have working examples that illustrate the new features of JavaFX. But I didn't pay $25 for a bunch of code listings. I buy a book for in-depth explanations of what is really going on and why.

Good Introduction to JavaFX 2
By Kai Wähner
The book gives an introduction to JavaFX 2, a web framework for realizing Rich Internet Applications (RIA). Overall, this is good book. If you want to get started with JavaFX 2, then you should buy this book. The book is easy to read and has good code examples (which you can download, too) for every feature.

Content
The book begins with a "getting started" chapter, which explains the initial setup of software and tools, and explains the basic concepts. This is what you need when you start with a new technology.

Afterwards, several chapters go into more detail about creating a user interface, defining properties and bindings, and using UI controls. After reading these chapters, you are ready to realize your first JavaFX application.

The next chapter explains the thread concept of JavaFX. This is very important to understand for writing responsive applications. After reading this chapter, you can start programming production-ready JavaFX clients. Of course, you also need to connect to a backend, so the chapter "accessing web services" is a must-read for developer who do not write standalone applications. The book explains several ways how to connect to a backend via XML or JSON. Even several addons and frameworks are mentioned including code examples (e.g. RESTFX or Jersey).

Further chapters describe how to use advanced UI controls for creating charts or including media files.

The last chapter describes how to use alternative JVM languages and layout markup languages besides Java, namely Groovy, Scala, FXML, and Visage. This chapter is awesome. Even if you do not have any experience with these languages, you will learn and understand the differences compared to Java, and see why and when you can benefit from using another language instead of Java.

Criticism
Even though this book is a great introduction to JavaFX 2, here is some criticism. The major weak point is that you do not get much information about deployment. You can deploy JavaFX applications as standalone application, as Applet within a web browser, or run it via Java WebStart. But how do you do that? How do you configure the application (e.g. how do you configure your JNLP file for Java WebStart)? Every developer needs to know this to use the application outside of his IDE... You have to google to get answers.

Besides, two minor weak points:
Firstly, there is no word about unit testing. How should you write tests for your JavaFX application? Are there any best practices?
Secondly, when should you use JavaFX, when should you use another framework (e.g. JSF, GWT, Grails, etc.)? This book has a lot of marketing style, so you won't get an answer here about problems of JavaFX.

Conclusion
As mentioned in the beginning, this is a very good introduction to JavaFX (omitting the deployment aspect) and easy to read. Every feature is explained in detail, including good code examples. So, if you want to get started with JavaFX 2, I can recommend this book to you.

Great resource
By Amazon Customer
For those looking for a quick summary, here it is: Overall, I thought it was a really good book that should get you up and running with JavaFX very quickly.

Now, the details. As I said, I think this is a very solid technical book, which is hard thing to accomplish. Some books are really dry and overly technical, making them hard to read and reference, while others are fun to read, but shallow and not very helpful. This book, though, strikes a great balance, I think. There's a wealth of knowledge, but I found it flows pretty well and doesn't bog the user down in the super technical details. I do, though, read a fair number of these types of books, so maybe I'm numbed to that. Your mileage may vary. : )

Chapter 1, "Getting a Jump Start in JavaFX", might be the most important, as it introduces the technology to the user. Lose him here, and the rest of the book is worthless to him. The authors did a great job of working through a simple, yet functional application, hitting the high points. They didn't spend a great deal of time on the details, but gave the reader enough to grasp kinda-sorta what's going on. There is tons of source code and pictures, which is extremely helpful. You don't have to go download the source and glance back and forth between the book and your computer. It's literally all right there.

Chapter 2 deals with "Creating a User Interface in JavaFX". The component library in JavaFX is large and growing, so the book can't (and shouldn't) cover all of them, this chapter hits some of the major ones, showing how to put them on the screen, lay them out, have them respond to events like mouse clicks, etc. Again, there is a lot of source code, giving the reader plenty of complete examples right the book to follow. Skipping a bit, Chapter 4 shows how to write (visually) scalable applications with no static positioning, while Chapter 5 returns to the topic of components, demonstrating a large number of the components and how to use them. Using these three chapters, I was able to get a non-functioning, but non-trivial UI mocked up in no time.

Chapter 3 covers properties and bindings, two of the more fascinating aspects of the library, in my opinion. This one dives a bit deeper into the interfaces involved in the topics (including some UML for those that into that sort of thing), but still manages to be very readable. Like chapter 3, chapter 6 covers something not necessarily graphical, collections and concurrency. This chapter covers the new, rich collections API, while addressing the concurrency issues that are sure to arise in a modern, event-driven application.

Chapter 7 spends considerable time on the charting features available in JavaFX, an important part of many business applications. The chapter has plenty of source and graphics to look at, and spends some time on styling the charts with CSS

Chapter 8 shows the media control features in the JavaFX. In this chapter, the user is walked through building simple, yet functional audio and video players. This is very practical chapter, I think, giving interested parties a great starting point in making their media-capable applications.

Chapter 9 seemed to me to take a very odd departure. What in the world do web services have to do with JavaFX? The answer is nothing, really, but what this chapter does, though, is provide a very practical, real world usage of the various JavaFX APIs, both UI and concurrency. We're give great examples of ListCells, Services, TableViews, etc., and some more hands-on with JavaFX Property objects. I may have started the chapter confused, but I think in the end, this is one of my favorite chapters.

Chapter 10 and Appendix A round out the book by describing some of the alternate languages available to JavaFX developers, namely, GroovyFX, ScalaFX, Visage, and FXML. While these chapters are really more about these other languages than JavaFX itself, I think those open to non-Java JVM languages will find a wealth of information here to help them pick a language. Or reinforce a choice they've already made.

With all of that out of the way, if I had to say something bad about this book (and, I know, this will sound strange), I would say that maybe there's too much code. The amount of source in a book is, I think, a pretty subjective question. When learning something, it's great to have it all right there in front of you (the authors even include import statements, a rare, in my experience, but nice touch), but if you're just needing a quick answer found somewhere in the prose of the book, it can obscure things a bit. Having said that, I don't think they've done a bad thing here, as I like to see the code, but I can see someone being a bit put off by the multiple consecutive pages of code, so be forewarned.

As I said at the beginning, I really enjoyed this book. As I find the time to work more with JavaFX, I think this will be my go-to tome to help me through my issues. Can you find all of this information online? Certainly, as is the case with every technical book, but the authors have done a great job of distilling all that information into a readable text, meaning you'll spend less time on Google, and more time in your IDE of choice. If you're interested in learning JavaFX, this book is well worth your money.

A First Course in Loop Quantum Gravity, by Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin

This book provides an accessible introduction to loop quantum gravity and some of its applications, at a level suitable for undergraduate students and others with only a minimal knowledge of college level physics. In particular it is not assumed that the reader is familiar with general relativity and only minimally familiar with quantum mechanics and Hamiltonian mechanics. Most chapters end with problems that elaborate on the text, and aid learning. Applications such as loop quantum cosmology, black hole entropy and spin foams are briefly covered. The text is ideally suited for an undergraduate course in the senior year of a physics major. It can also be used to introduce undergraduates to general relativity and quantum field theory as part of a 'special topics' type of course.

Finally, a real introduction to the field.
By Christine C. Dantas
If you are looking for an introduction to Loop Quantum Gravity that *really* guides you through every *minimum* required piece of knowledge at the basis of this field, including an outline of the mathematics involved, in order to put you in a comfortable position to enter the research literature, then there is (currently) no better place to start.

It has always been a mystery to me why Rovelli's book, for instance, is generally considered as "introductory". Although it is a very well written book by one of the experts in the field, and obligatory reading for those seriously interested in studying the matter, readers who had never - or only slightly - been exposed to Loop Quantum Gravity will find it quite advanced at various places. The same occurs with other similar books in this field, considered "introductory": they may be so at places, but... only to the extent of your background, which seems an amusing way to put it, if not frustrating: "introductory-but-not-exactly-so".

That does not happen with Gambini and Pullin's book. It is indeed the only current *real* introductory, (not laymen, but mathematically-based!), self-study textbook on Loop Quantum Gravity. All other current books in the field - Rovelli's, Kiefer's, Thiemann's, etc - are excellent references to be studied *after* Gambini and Pullin's book. Finally, the basics of Loop Quantum Gravity is available in textbook form!

"A First Course in Loop Quantum Gravity" is in fact aimed at the advanced undergraduate level, and it does a great job to follow that difficult requirement. However, it is unavoidable that even an average reader at that level will have to accept some concepts without further detailed background. Gratefully, the authors are careful enough to state that explicitly, what is going on and why, and to offer a good, minimal list of references to follow at the end of each chapter, so that the reader can attempt studying the details. Various of these references are freely available in the internet as expository or review papers. There are also problems at the end of each chapter, suitable to self-study, as they are of the type: "prove", "show", "derive", "compute"... I believe that some of these problems will be regarded somewhat difficult for an undergraduate student. They are however excellent complements to the main text and should be seriously attempted.

The book is very pleasant to read and very clear. It is also amazingly concise and objective. I really like the way the authors expose every subtlety behind the theory; the "tips" and analogies offered throughout the text are really excellent, and effectively helped me to finally understand a few concepts which were confusing to me until recently.

The reader should, however, be advised that the contents are intrinsically advanced. It is definitely not for the common reader, it is a technical book. It is not an easy field anyway, as Loop Quantum Gravity obviously requires deep knowledge of quantum mechanics and general relativity, as well as several advanced mathematical concepts. But be sure that the authors will teach you what are the minimal required elements of these pre-requisites, so you will at least be aware of them and be able to pursue them further by yourself.

I highly recommend this book for anyone with complete undergraduate courses in physics and mathematics. With my own main background in astrophysics, I can say this book is also a great introduction for astronomers/astrophysicists/cosmologists who never studied Loop Quantum Gravity. A good complement in that regard (applications) would be Bojowald's books "Canonical Gravity and Applications: Cosmology, Black Holes, and Quantum Gravity" and "Quantum Cosmology: A Fundamental Description of the Universe", apart from the more advanced books already cited above (e.g., the obligatory and excellent books by Rovelli, Kiefer, Thiemann...). Finally, there is of course freely available review material in the arxiv site.

Congratulations to the authors for the great, concise, effective presentation of this challenging field to students and interested researchers coming from other fields.

the first step on a thousand mile journey
By arpard fazakas
Many non-experts who are interested in physics know that the current theory of gravity, Einstein's general theory of relativity, stands apart from the theories of the other three fundamental forces, the electromagnetic, weak nuclear, and strong nuclear forces, in that the former is a classical theory whereas the latter are quantum theories. Physicists like to unify things, so they would like to have the theory of gravity be a quantum theory as well, so they can then have a "theory of everything". In addition to being satisfying on a philosophical and esthetic level, this would also potentially be able to explain what's going on at the center of black holes and at the "beginning" of the Big Bang, for which general relativity gives a singularity, an unphysical point of infinite energy density indicating that general relativity is no longer properly describing the physical reality in these situations.

One approach to a quantum theory of gravity is the famous (perhaps infamous) "string theory". Another approach, the approach discussed in this book, is loop quantum gravity, in which a more traditional approach to quantizing the gravitational field is employed. In a nutshell, loop quantum gravity is a canonical quantization of a modification of the Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity originally developed by Arnowitt, Deser, and Misner in the early 1960s ("ADM formalism"), said modification being the replacement of the position and momentum variables used by ADM with a new set of variables introduced by Ashtekar in the 1980s. Canonical quantization refers to the quantization procedure based on the Hamiltonian originally developed by Dirac in the 1920s and further developed by him in the 1950s. Loop quantum gravity uses a "loop representation" which has as a key result that there is a minimum allowed length, area, and volume in the universe, i.e, these quantities are quantized. This in turn leads to the result that the universe has a minimum size, and if we play the movie of cosmic expansion backwards, we reach this minimum size before we reach the singularity, and the universe starts to expand again, the so-called "Big Bounce". Also, the relation between the surface area and entropy of a black hole reduces to a relationship between the number of area quanta which make up the surface area and the entropy.

This book is directed at the advanced undergraduate level, and aims to fill a gap in the pedagogy of this subject, which requires much more math and physics background to really understand than any undergraduate would have. As a result, it takes a very simplistic approach and should be considered no more than a very preliminary introduction to the topic.

The first part of the book covers all the basic background concepts needed to understand the program of loop quantum gravity, including general relativity, the generalized Hamiltonian with constraints, and canonical quantization. It then goes on to discuss the ADM formalism, Ashtekar variables, the loop representation, and applications of loop quantum gravity to cosmology and black hole thermodynamics. It ends with a very honest evaluation of the limitations and incompleteness of the theory at the present time. Loop quantum gravity is still a work in progress, and although there have been many important advances in terms of formulating a theory, there is as yet no validation experimentally, nor any obvious path to such a validation.

You will not really understand loop quantum gravity when you finish this book, only understand a very superficial version of it "dumbed down" for the intended readership of this book, but still extremely formidable in terms of its demands on the reader mathematically speaking. If you haven't already had at least an introductory exposure to general relativity, quantum mechanics, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics, and quantum field theory, you're in for some very tough sledding indeed. If you have this background, after you finish this book you will be prepared to delve more deeply into the topic if you have the time and inclination. Included are references to more advanced texts as well as important review papers to guide this further exploration.

I give this book 5 stars for identifying a pedagogical need, clearly defining the intended readership and the goals, and carefully describing the inevitable limitations and gaps in trying to present such a sophisticated, difficult topic to a relatively unprepared audience.

Nice Overview of the physics involved in the quantization of Gravity (put aside string theory)
By Ricardo Avila
This book contains a nice overview of the Physics involved in the more traditional approach to quantizing gravity, that is Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG). It is important to say though that all the topics treated are only superficially presented which I suppose it is ok considering the audience it is target at, that is, advanced undergraduates who have not yet had a real exposure to topics like Classical Field Theory, Quantum Field Theory, Dirac's theory of Constraints and General Relativity. Having said this I must say that the book gives you not so much formulas but the really important (and necessary), the rest is very nicely explained with words, so it reads much as a story. It starts by revising special relativity and the formulation of Maxwell's electrodynamics both first through the usual approach and then using relativistic tensorial formulation. Then it proceeds to present General Relativity first giving the basics of curved geometry, i.e. vectors, tangent spaces and the jumping straight to curvature. After this, Einsteins equations are presented along with two of its exact solutions: the Schwarszchild and Robertson-Walker spacetimes, also a word on diffeomorphisms and the Lie derivative are given. Then the famous 3+1 decomposition of GR is given, this is, the ADM (Arnowitt-Deser-Misner) formulation and the metric is also decomposed in triads which will be essentially used later as one of the canonically variables of the reformulation of GR. After this the theory of Hamiltonian mechanics with constraints is given and then Yang-Mills theories. Then the authors reminds about quantum mechanics, and the generalization of this to field theories, quantum field theories, a brief introduction to interacting field theories is given explaining how divergences appear in perturbative series where also Feynman diagrams are illustrated. Finally a word on renormalization is also given. After this the reformulation of General Relativity in terms of the new Ashtekar's variables is presented. All the grace of this new change of variable is that now GR can be written much similar to a usual Yang Mills theory and originally there was hope that since YM were known on as how to quantize them, the same would happen here but unfortunately the Hamiltonian Constraint is either complex (and simple) or is real and so complicated that it has not been solved until this day. Toward the end of the book are presented loop variables, the concept of spin networks, mentioned the result that in loop quantum gravity there is an Area and Volume operator and so area and volume in this theory are quantize, there is a chapter on loop quantum cosmology and finally the last chapter touches upon some known facts about black holes like Hawking Radiation and black hole entropy, spin foams which are basically the many spin networks intertwined together as you move from one geometry to another in the path integral for GR, some possible experiments that could be done to test this theory and the Loved by me and intriguing "Problem of Time" which basically consists in that as the Hamiltonian of GR is just a sum of constraints and on the other part constraints vanish weakly, the whole thing (i.e. the entire Hamiltonian) vanishes and by hamilton's equations this implies that there is no evolution in time of any dynamical variable, in other words, the whole system is frozen!, well I like the book and give to it four stars because sometimes is just a little too sloppy on some of the material presented although when it is, it does gives you a proper reference to look at for further study, all in all, nice book!
