Hence, in general, modern applications re quire a mix of software-based and hardware-based computations. Applications using this mix can be designed with the help of hardware/software co-design systems. Many such co-design systems have been described so far (references can be found in this book), but many of these are based on heuristics. In this book, Niemann describes a co-design system which is based on sound modeling techniques. This system has the following salient features: • Precise cost and performance figures Design decisions for implementing a certain function in hardware or software are based on 'cost and performance figures for the different design alterna tives. Hence, good designs can only be expected if these figures are accurate. In order to achieve excellent accuracy, Niemann takes a new approach: the cost of software implementations is derived from the data available about the target processors and from knowledge about the code size. the performance of software implement at ions is computed by compiling the given function and then using static analysis for computing worst case execution times. the cost of hardware implementation is estimated by running higher-Ievel synthesis tools. the performance of hardware implementations is again computed by us ing static analysis.

About the Author
Brian J. Walsh (PhD, McGill University) serves as the Christian Reformed Church chaplain to the University of Toronto and as adjunct professor of theology of culture at Wycliffe College. He is the coauthor with J. Richard Middleton of Truth Is Stranger Than It Used to Be (IVP Academic, 1995), with Sylvia Keesmaat of Colossians Remixed (IVP Academic, 2004) and with Steven Bouma-Prediger of Beyond Homelessness (Eerdmans, 2008). He is also the author of Langdon Gilkey (University Press of America, 1992) and Subversive Christianity (Alta Vista College Press, 1994).

J. Richard Middleton (PhD, Free University of Amsterdam) is professor of Biblical Worldview and Exegesis at Northeastern Seminary at Roberts Wesleyan College, in Rochester, NY, and serves as adjunct professor of Old Testament at the Caribbean Graduate School of Theology, in Kingston, Jamaica. He is the author of The Liberating Image (Brazos, 2005) and coauthor with Brian Walsh of Truth Is Stranger Than It Used to Be (IVP Academic, 1995).

An excellent book on developing a Christian worldview

This book is a penetrating critique of modernism, the prevailing ethos in which we live. It calls Christians to be aware of the presuppositions of the world around us and to renew our minds by seeking after Christlikeness.

Excellent book
By Hope
This book was used as a textbook in one of my college classes through Regent University. The class, "Contemporary Problems for Christian Leaders," was very enlightening. The book covers world views in general and Christian world views specifically. As a Christian, my world view was transformed by this book, not in an earth-shaking way, but in a subtle way. Instead of Christianity being separate from "the world," I now see Christianity as redeeming the world. I would highly recommend this book.

A Bit Like A Textbook, But Good

The Transforming Vision was a book I was assigned to read for a Cedarville University education class I took several years ago. It is divided into four parts and consists of twelve chapters:

Part 1: What are Worldviews?
Chapter 1: Worldview and Culture
Chapter 2: Analyzing Worldviews
Part 2: The Biblical Worldview
Chapter 3: Based on Creation
Chapter 4: Acknowledging the Fall
Chapter 5: Transformed by Redemption
Part 3: The Modern Worldview
Chapter 6: The Problem of Dualism
Chapter 7: The Development of Dualism
Chapter 8: The Rise of the Secular Worldview
Chapter 9: The Gods of Our Age
Part 4: The Biblical Worldview in Action
Chapter 10: A Christian Cultural Response
Chapter 11: Worldview and Scholarship
Chapter 12: Toward a Christian Philosophical Framework

The premise of this 215-page book is that society is a wreck and only through a Christian worldview can it truly be transformed. Dr. Walsh and Dr. Middleton desire to see every facet of life transformed - families, schools, businesses, governments, and more. They explain how the Christian worldview is the key to that transformation.

The Transforming Vision is a good book that is well-documented and biblically sound, but it reads very much like a college textbook. It is not a challenging read, but it definitely requires some reflection. I have read a few books pertaining to the topic of worldviews, and The Transforming Vision is not at the top of my list of most enjoyable worldview reads. I recommend Chuck Colson's How Now Shall We Live? for something that is both engaging and thought-provoking. James Sire's The Universe Next Door provides a better overview of major non-Christian worldviews. Although I have recommended reading other worldview books, I did benefit from reading The Transforming Vision and believe it will continue to bless many others.

A superb resource

Dr. Marks has done great work in creating a handbook for the primary care provider anywhere on the globe to develop the core skills to use ultrasound for common diagnostic dilemmas. This book is clearly designed for use in the office or emergency setting where rapid diagnosis is important, especially when a radiologist is not available or when your clinical question is straightforward.

The pages are filled with images - and are easy to comprehend pairing of images with one of them outlining the structures that allows the reader to see the clean image and understand the anatomy better. I highly recommend this book for the clinician who wants to develop their US skills and provide a higher level of diagnostic accuracy for their patients without having to send them out of the office. A Practical Approach for clinicians

This recently published textbook is ideally suited to the clinician - physician, nurse practioner or midwife who is begining to use Ultrasound for patient diagnosis in the office or clinic. Emphasis is placed on identfying those conditions that require referral for either a confirmatory diagnosis or for surgical intervention. More than 8o pages of this 176 page book are devoted to obstetric diagnosis, where Ultrasound is at its life saving best.
The format is very user friendly with parallel sets of images with those on the right highlighting the anatomy or pathology seen on the screen image.
Dr Marks' practical approach to Ultrasound is a great addition to moving the use of Ultrasound beyond the radiologist and contributing to its achieving its rightful role as the stethoscope of the 21st century.

Great Resource for Primary Care Docs

This book is perfect for those of us who practice primary care medicine. Each organ system is covered in a concise, practical and readable manner. The book provides insight and understanding of the capability and methodology of ultrasound without going into boring details of interest only to ultrasonographers. The illustrations are clear with explanations that are easy to understand. I'm sure the information I gathered in reading this book will be of great value in ordering ultrasound studies and intepreting their results.

She persuaded some soldiers to help her with the Chateau and through her prayers made a stunning discovery that changed the Marquis's fortunes.

Charming Old-Fashioned Romance

This historical novel is reminiscent of the Jane Eyre genre.

The Marquis de Castillon has settled into his now considerably reduced family chateau to heal from wounds sustained from serving under Napoleon. While he was recuperating in a convent hospital, he and a patient in the next bed, Colonel Dawlish, agreed to care for each others' families should they not survive.

Col. Dawlish's three children arrive at the chateau, which is in dire need of repair after the French revolution. The plucky children make the best of the situation, grateful to have a place to belong after losing both their parents, and you cannot help commiserating with them as they settle in.

While I enjoy historical novels, too many of them seem to entail horrific abuse as a backdrop, as if the author equated "nasty" with "realistic". This is a very sweet and sentimental old-fashioned romance that I would highly recommend.

I love the simplistic writing style of Dame Cartland. She was the very first author I ever read, so I have a soft spot in my heart for her novels. And I love that the entire collection is being released again at resonable prices...I can afford to visit as often as I like.
