Paul Gilroy is the author of the seminal work “Black Atlantic” (1993) and the leading exponent of black diaspora studies. Paul Gilroy was born as East Londoner with Caribbean and English parents. He is currently a Professor at Kings College London and taught Sociology at the London School of Economics and Yale before. He studied at the Birmingham Centre of Contemporary Cultural Studies. “There Ain’t No Black in the Union Jack” appeared 1987 and reflects Gilroy’s PhD at Birmingham. Gilroy had worked on the famous CCCS “The Empire Strikes Back” project before. Gilroy wants to link the homely cultural studies of Richard Hoggart and E.P. Thompson with the thoughts of radical black thinkers.
Gilroy’s position on race is anti-essentialist. Simone de Beauvoir wrote “One is not born a woman, but becomes one”. Gilroy defends a similar position towards race. “Race” is a political category that can accommodate different meanings which are determined by struggle. In the hierarchy of dimension of inequality “race” should be accorded an equivalent place to class and gender. Gilroy believes structural transformations have reduced the homogeneity and political weight of the working class and the Left should move away from blaming modern social movements of not corresponding to the models written in the 19th century. Gilroy criticizes the idea of an English patriotism of the Left fostered by Tony Benn, Eric Hobsbawm and E.P. Thompson. “There Ain’t No Black in the Union Jack” is implicitly also a contribution to the debate about the peculiarities of the development and the weakness of Marxist tradition in England.
The book starts with an overview of theories about the relationship between “race” and “class”. Gilroy justifies his search for the distinctive, particular characteristics of race and racism in Britain with a critique of the different Marxist approaches of Ambalavener Silvanandan, Robert Miles and Ernesto Laclau.
“Race” and “Racism” is historically particular. The new racism sees race as a cultural issue and not primarily as a biological category. British racists such as Enough Powell understand race with the metaphor of a foreign invasion of Britain. Black criminality is an essential aspect of the race discussions. Gilroy introduces the findings of the CCCS study on “Mugging” and Social Panics. There is an identification of the law with national interests and of criminality with non-English qualities. In 1976 mugging is conceived as a racial crime and legality is the pre-eminent symbol of national culture. “Race” is not an essential biological category. There is a process of “race” formation. The antagonisms between the blacks and the police shaped black settlers in Britain into a political community.
The second part of the voluminous book examines variants of anti-Racism. Gilroy portrays the “Rock against Racism” movement of the late 1970s and the anti-racism campaign of the Greater London Council under Livingston in the 1980s. The GLC’s municipal Anti-Racism appears to endorse the idea that racial groups are real in the sense of being fixed and exclusive. But races are political collectives, not ahistorical essences. The essentialism of the GLC leads to a campaign which detaches issues of “race” and “prejudice” from the concrete social and political conflicts.
After this critique of essentialism Gilroy introduces the concept of the “Black Diaspora”. In the last part of the book Gilroy analyses the relationship between blacks and whites in the leisure institutions of urban Britain. Because of the influence of black styles, music, dress, dance, fashion and language, youth cultures became repositories of anti-racist feelings. The extensive chapter on black music in Jamaica, the US and Britain, provides elements of a history of black Soul and Rock music and is worth reading for those interested in understanding the relationship between Rock music and youth rebellion.
Gilroy manages to portray the dialectics of a particular modern British version of “race” and Racism. Unfortunately Gilroy does not show how the defeat of the English labour movement in the late 1970s and early 1980s shaped the relationship between “class” and “race”.

Love Willow

I am a total willow rose fan. her books are easy reads and enjoyable. This is second in the series ( I've also read the third book and it was great too). She has a way to make you connect with the characters. Overnight they become my friends and I look forward to learning more about them. He's a great homicide detective who puts his kids first. His mom and dad are just great people and of course, there is the famous Shannon. A great read, an enjoyable family and a little mystery thrown in.

What a Cliffhanger

Normally, I don't like books with cliffhangers. This is so very different. Just long enough, this book ends when you look up and realize you've been up all night reading and you have half an hour to get ready for school. The crescendo comes at just the part of the book when you finally gasp for air. Oh yeah, one of the best of Ms. Roses's work. Loved it!

Fast Light Reading

A good book to get a feel for the life of Linus Torvalds, the inventor of Linux, a computer operating system. The book contains insights into his life, living a frugal computer-geek existence in Finland struggling to make his computer payments to eventually, a mansion in California and getting involved in the "American Dream". It comes across in the book that the author did his research actually spending many personable hours with Linus and family.

Aside from an anecdotal biography the book contains some gems. One is Linus's philosophy of the progression of technology. The introduction of a new invention at first aids survival, then supports social order and efficiency, then as the invention becomes common place, the item is obtained for it entertainment value. Linux the operating system, was written, "Just for Fun" and so provides the title.

The other strong point of this book is that it contains one of the better explanations of the "free software" concept, licensing, and copyrights and licensing intellectual property v.s. creativity. This reader would have liked the book more if it were a little more technical. I also found the author's conversational style to the reader irritating as if talking to a child.

If you are looking for a glimpse of the Linus Torvalds you could sit down and have a beer with, this book is for you.

This is a very quick read. You could even say fluffy. But I really enjoyed it. I use Linux everyday and it has become my preferred operating system for almost everything except managing the Windows environments that pay my bills.

The moments in the book I most enjoyed were reading about Linus' family life, his introduction to computers, and the culture he grew up in. I found all of this very interesting and inspiring.

I didn't enjoy the somewhat "serious" chapters toward the end - and in terms of a "good" bit of writing the book falls short. I suspect Diamond had his work cut out for him trying to coax the material our of Torvalds to produce an entire book.

None the less, I'm happy I picked it up and it was quick and fun read. It is not a technical book, so if you are looking for an in depth technical analysis of Torvalds and the early development of Linux this is not it.

If you are looking for a glimpse of the Linus Torvalds you could sit down and have a beer with, this book is for you.

Slow start - Great Book

I was a little skeptical that I'd like this book in the beginning. I was a little taken back with "I was raised in a laundry basket and we had a lot of snow in Finland". I thought, I don't give one, whatever, about this... But in hindsight, the personal side of Linus was what I ended up enjoying the most about the book. We are the same age (ok, that is about the only accomplishment we have in common), and it was kind of fun relating to his experiences with the Vic20 (all of the rich kids could afford the commodore 64, with a DISK DRIVE!), as well as his balance of a healthy ego with self-effacing humor. Flat out - I thoroughly enjoyed the book. The co-author added value, but seemed to get carried away with showing how witty he was (i.e. - he kept relaying some verbal exchanges with Linus where he had some cool, witty response, and the purpose of telling it often seemed to be to demonstrate how well he connected with Linus). Ok, maybe I'm just being a pain now because I feel obliged to complain about something - otherwise I'd feel that you'd think my 5 star rating was a plant. The OS zealots already bought this book, but if you're just into computers, you'll like it. Well done.

About the Author
Charles Brase has more than 30 years of full-time teaching experience in mathematics and statistics. He taught at the University of Hawaii, Manoa Campus, for several years and at Regis University in Denver, Colorado, for more than 28 years. Charles received the Excellence in Teaching award from the University of Hawaii and the Faculty Member of the Year award from Regis University on two occasions. He earned degrees from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and has a Ph.D. in Mathematics, an M.A. in Mathematics, and a B.A. in Physics.

Corrinne Pellillo Brase has taught at Hawaii Pacific College, Honolulu Community College, and Arapahoe Community College in Littleton, Colorado. She was also involved in the mathematics component of an equal opportunity program at the University of Colorado. Corrinne received the Faculty of the Year award from Arapahoe Community College. She earned degrees from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and has an M.A. and B.A. in Mathematics.

AWFUL!!

Doesn't explain things well and gives hardly any examples of how to use a formula. A total WASTE of money. Getting an A in the class because the professor is a great teacher which is why I stopped reading the book after I found it useless around chapter 3.

feeling like I am trying to read greek

I am sure it's a perfectly reasonable book. I'd probably be able to tell this if it were readable. I bought the e-book and the encryption is wonky, so I have been studying for an exam, feeling like I am trying to read greek, in the formulas, but it turns out they just aren't configured properly and I have been trying to figure out the formula for standard deviation for several hours.

The ratings for this have nothing to do with Amazon. I rented this book as a digital copy for my Kindle. I was really happy about it first because of how much money I was saving on this digital version compared to a rented hard copy I could've gotten from my college's bookstore. I found many errors with this book. There were some words that were missing their letters. I was like okay nothing huge I can't handle. Thats not all it was though. Once we started getting into more formulas, the formula examples in the book, as well as the problems were missing key variables and some of those variables were substituted with another variable. For example a simple minus sign ( - ) wasn't there. Instead of a square root, it was replaced by a capital (B). Also the equal ( = ) sign was replaced with a number 5 in a different font. It was really frustrating. Thankfully Amazon helped me. Giving me a full refund on my rental. They said they hope to fix the issue within a month. So I hope you have a fixed version compared to what I got. Sadly I'll have to buy a hard copy rental of this book spending more money than I wanted to. Hope this helps you and thank you Amazon for your assistance!
