The Tarahumara were known for their grace and speed. The fastest and most graceful of them all was Arnulfo Quimare, and to this day I consider him one of my noblest competitors. In 2005, two weeks after my seventh consecutive Western States 100 victory, I set out to conquer the Badwater Ultramarathon, a 135-mile endurance slog through Death Valley. Mile 12, 120 degrees, and I'm leading. What could go wrong? Interesting, but uneven read

I am a casual runner at best--my race of choice is a 10K, and I will never be a marathoner, but I'm fascinated by these athletes who push themselves to the absolute limit of human endurance. I read an article about Scott Jurek in Runner's World and picked up his book, wanting to read more about the psychology of ultra-racing and his vegan diet.
I found this book to an enjoyable, but uneven read. There were parts of the book that I found engaging--the descriptions of races, for one. When he describes running uphill on mile 100 through the searing Death Valley heat, running through the pain of a sprained ankle, and trying not to pass out from dehydration (or too much hydration), you feel like you're right alongside him in his road crew cheering him on. His sarcastic, pull-no-punches running partner Dusty is a great character, and I enjoyed reading about the way they trained together. He shared some beautiful and poignant moments with his mother, who suffered from multiple sclerosis when he was growing up. Although I'm an omnivore myself, I liked the vegan recipes (and tried some of them) and found the passages on veganism to be interesting, not preachy.
I would've liked to have read more about his relationship with his wives, both current and ex--his wife Jenny is only mentioned in passing at the end of the book, and scant mention is made of his first wife Leah. What was her (their?) role in his life and running career? He delves deep into his difficult childhood, and those chapters are some of the best in the book, but doesn't devote much space to his personal relationships as an adult. To me this was a glaring omission. I bought the book to read about the unique mindset of an extreme endurance athlete, and in some passages, Jurek excelled at this. But here and there, he would change gears and speak to the casual runner (e.g., me), or someone who wants to give running a try. There are other books out there which do a much better job of targeting that population and those passages in this book felt thrown in, or added haphazardly. I would've rather have seen that space devoted to ultrarunning.

Great race recaps with inspirational message

Scott Jurek didn't have an easy, lazy childhood. His mother became ill and his father has to work, so Scott ends up taking care of his younger siblings. He chops wood, learns to cook, and becomes self-sufficient. While I would never advocate a child losing his/her childhood completely, it would be lovely if more children were tasked with chores and responsibilities at an early age.
He begins running as an adolescent in order to escape the pressures of his daily life and to condition himself for cross-country skiing. At first he hates running, but over time grows to love it and it becomes his main sport. He realizes that he becomes stronger the longer he runs, rather than the other way around.
Thus begins a career of ultrarunning - running distances over that oh-so-easy 26.2 miles (having never run more than a mile, I am being facetious.) Jurek has ran and won races that are over 100 miles on a regular basis.
Jurek became a vegan when he took up distance running seriously. At the end of each chapter, he features a training tip and a vegan recipe.
What I loved most, though, was the wisdom that Jurek imparts. He's clearly a very deep person who has learned a lot over his lifetime.

*What we eat is a matter of life and death. Food is who we are.
*Difficulty would help. It had always helped. I was finally figuring that out. All the whys in the universe hadn't granted me peace or given me answers.
*You could carry your burdens lightly or with great effort.
*Now we sit. We drive and surf on the internet and watch television. And naturally, we suffer.
*Whether you get what you want isn't what defines you. It's how you go about your business.
*We all lose sometimes. We fail to get what we want. Friends and loved ones leave. We make a decision we regret. We try our hardest and come up short. It's not the losing that defines us. It's how we lose. It's what we do afterward.
The only reason I've given it 4 over 5 stars is that there were times that the book felt very long. But overall, highly recommend.

Inspiring

Good story and inspiring. Wish the recipes were grouped together though instead of spread out throughout the book. It breaks up the reading too much and if you were to reference them later you'd either have to bookmark or flip through the entire book to find a specific recipe.
