Me, Inc. features a black simulated-leather cover with gold foil stamping and a black ribbon bookmark.

The fact that KISS is one of the most successful rock bands in the world is no accident. From the beginning Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley had a clear-cut vision of what they wanted to do and how they wanted to operate KISS as a business well before they ever first took the stage. Since deciding with Paul to manage the band themselves, Simmons has proved himself to be a formidable businessman, having sold over 100 million CDs and DVDs worldwide, overseen over 3,000 licensed merchandise items, and starred in the longest running celebrity reality show to date. More impressive is that he handles all of his business ventures on his own—no personal assistant, few handlers, and as little red tape as possible.

In Me, Inc., Simmons shares a lifetime of field-tested and hard-won business advice that will provide readers with the tools needed to build a solid business strategy, harness the countless tools available in the digital age, network like hell, and be the architect for the business entity that is you. Inspired by The Art of War, the book dispenses Simmons’ in-depth insights via thirteen specific principles for success based on his own experience, triumphs, and instructional failures in business—from finding the confidence within yourself that’s necessary to get started, to surrounding yourself with the right people to partner with and learn from, to knowing when to pull the plug and when to double-down. These thirteen principles are a skeleton key into a world of success, freedom, peace of mind and, most importantly, financial success.

Review
“The hard-learned wisdom laid out here is a road map for success that anyone can benefit from.” (John Varvatos, from his foreword for Me, Inc.)

“You literally can turn to any page, pick a random sentence and likely find potent words of wisdom.” (Wall Street Journal)

“Underneath Kiss bassist Gene Simmons’s makeup is a shrewd businessman. In this advice book, he doles out tips for entrepreneurs and anyone who wants to get ahead.” (Parade)

“The only time it’s acceptable to take advice from someone in Kabuki makeup and a metal plated codpiece is when he’s sold more than 20 million albums and has 10 platinum records. And let’s not get started on the thousands of Kiss licensing deals Simmons helped bring to the band.” (Fortune)

“Why should we do what Simmons says? Well, for starters, Simmons-a notorious rock star, raconteur, and business maven-has a global cultural recognition just a few pegs below Mickey Mouse, Coca-Cola, and Superman.” (Men’s Health)

“Brutally honest business advice . . . Simmons . . . distills 40 years of leading the global-phenomenon rock band, which has franchised into a billion pieces of merchandise, including everything from comic books to a coffee shop.” (New York Post)

From the Back Cover

The quintessential self-made man, master of brand identity, New York Times bestselling author, and award-winning executive—KISS's Gene Simmons—shares his manifesto for business success.

KISS did not become one of the most successful rock bands in history by accident. Long before he first took the stage, Gene Simmons had a clear-cut operating plan for the business. Over the past forty years, KISS has sold more than 100 million CDs and DVDs worldwide and manages 5,000 licensed merchandise items—from comic books and coffins to action figures and video games. The band received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 2014 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In addition to KISS, Simmons's lucrative ventures include two hit reality shows, a professional sports team, a restaurant chain, and a record label. A recipient of the Forbes Lifetime Achievement Award, this brilliant executive runs all of his businesses on his own—no personal assistant, few handlers, and as little red tape as possible.

In Me, Inc., Simmons gives aspiring entrepreneurs the critical tools they need to succeed. He discusses how to build a solid business strategy, harness the countless tools available in the digital age, educate yourself, and be the architect for the business entity that is you. Inspired by The Art of War, Me, Inc. is organized around thirteen specific, easy-to-understand principles for success—"The Art of More"—drawn from Simmons's own triumphs and failures. From finding the confidence necessary to get started, to surrounding yourself with the right people, to knowing when to pull the plug and when to double-down, these principles can help you attain the freedom and wealth of your dreams.

√ Better it's MY MONEY than anyone else's
By Bassocantor
ME, INC. is a well-written, hard-hitting discussion on how to make lots of BIG MONEY. Gene has the answer, and it's very clear: Focus 100% on ME. Not your wife, not your children, not your friends. Just ME.

The first part of ME, INC is a biography of Simmons, and what he did to achieve world fame in heavy metal rock. This was interesting, and illustrates the author's point about the opportunities to achieve great success in America. Simmons (not his given name, of course) came to the U.S. not even knowing English. He worked hard, saved his money, got an education, and figured out how to create a BRAND.

Part two contains Simmons' recipes for success. He calls these many tips the "Art of More." These principles are pretty good ideas. For example, #16, "Find Partners who Complement you," #3, "Learn from the Masters," etc. The tips are practical, and many of them are variations of the American work ethic. Work diligently, stop looking for excuses, don't give up, save money, watch your spending, educate yourself, etc. He admits that you might have some unusual obstacles to overcome, but so what--life isn't fair. Get over it and stop whining.

As reasonable (and practical) as many of these ideas are, however, Simmons' business tips are not the central theme of this book, nor are they much different than what is found in many success books. Old fashioned hard work and self-reliance is a common theme in many business books.

Gene hammers home repeatedly the central theme: Pursue your dream with absolute ruthless passion. Build your brand, and do whatever it takes. However hard you have to work, whatever you have to sacrifice. Don't take vacations, work all night if necessary, don't get married, don't have too many children--ANYTHING it takes. "Wait until you build your fortune, so you can afford to get married or divorced." If you take vacations and holidays, "that spells 'loser.'"

Gene uses Steve Jobs as another creative genius who was on a ruthless mission. Jobs was not an electronics genius, but he pursued his dream with a vengeance. He didn't let anything get in his way of his dream product and company.

Although the author uses Jobs as an example of what to do--ignore friends and family, pursue your dream with 100% pure dedication, Gene nonetheless hopes the reader will be more soft-hearted than the callous Jobs. It seems to me that the author trips himself up here. Jobs was more consistent in the self-centered, ruthless approach to business than Simmons is. Why should anyone be more kind? That doesn't follow if you are consistent with the 100% ME philosophy. The author mentions the Ashton Kutcher movie, JOBS, but the movie pales in comparison with the outstanding book by Walter Isaacson, Steve Jobs

√ The message of ME, INC., is extremely clear: Ruthlessly pursue Big Money, make it the absolute #1 goal of your life. Do not compromise. Do whatever it takes. Don't let anyone get in your way. The reader will have to decide whether that is a worthy goal; however, if your dream is in fact the rainbow of Big Money, then ME, INC. is the right book to find that treasure.

Tells it like it is.
By S. White
Disclaimer: I am not a Kiss fan, never was. I didn't dislike them -- I just never listened to them. You could say that Gene Simmons simply wasn't a blip on my radar. I only bought the book because of the title and the dust-jacket. I can now say that I am a fan of Gene Simmons the businessman. I forced my husband to listen to the book, and now I am going to bribe my young-adult children to listen to the book too.

Review:

If you're at all interested in the entrepreneurial life, or if you're on the fence about becoming an entrepreneur, READ THIS BOOK (or listen to it).

-- If you read the book and find yourself saying, "Hell, yeah!" then pat yourself on the back. You have what it takes to be an entrepreneur and live the entrepreneurial life.

-- If you read the book and find yourself saying, "Oh, I would never do that!" or, "This is screwed up!" then put down the book and walk away. Not everyone is wired for entrepreneurship -- and thank goodness for that! Imagine a billion little Napoleons running around, all trying to build an empire...

= = = = =

The good: I liked the concise "biography" about his career and the business/personal choices he made. He tells you WHAT choices he made, and WHY he made them. This gives you an intimate look inside the mind of one of the most prolific businessmen of our time.

-- He reinforced my belief in hard work and long hours (people close to me are always telling me to take time off).

-- Some people tell me that I should spend OPM (Other People's Money) to build my business, and that it is too risky to spend my OWN money on a business. Mr. Simmons lays out WHY he chose to spend his own money to launch Kiss, and how he minimized the financial downside should the venture fail.

-- After seeing (hearing) how Gene Simmons worked his life, I got some fresh ideas on how I can rework my own time/actions to better align my goals and priorities.

-- Yeah, why not go for the big money? Think small and your brain shrinks.

The bad:

(a) A few parts of the book are a bit repetitive, but Mr. Simmons admits this in the book and gives his reasons: These parts bear repeating, so listen up!

(b) The advice in the "You" section for women, especially as regards motherhood choices, is (as Mr. Simmons admits) politically incorrect... but completely true. Been there, done that, and am navigating the consequences as best I can.

Actually, pretty good.
By Ryan J. Dejonghe
One of the most shocking things about the new Gene Simmons book: it is actually good. At first glance, the faux leather cover and ribbon book marker make Simmons’s ME, INC. appear as expected: contrived. Quite the contrary.

Die-hard KISS fans may not find much new here, besides some added inspiration. For the uninitiated, as I was, this book provides a keen insight on what made (and makes) Gene Simmons successful. As he describes it, his own due diligence and self-educating created his empire and the throne he sits upon. For someone chasing the proverbial American dream, Simmons provides quite the example.

This is a tamer, more heartfelt Simmons. And yes, I just used the word “heartfelt” in the same sentence as Simmons. Probably the most rowdy statement in this book is Simmons’s proclamation that everyone should learn English and speak it without an accent—as he did. Otherwise, Simmons exposes his many failures, the risks he took, and the successes he achieved, all in inspiring detail. Think of him as the Zig Ziglar of Rock and Roll.

Simmons’s voice is authentic throughout. As far as I can tell in the writing, and from what is written in the acknowledgements, I don’t think Simmons used a ghost writer. From what he speaks of his own hard work, it is not surprising that he would labor over a keyboard to produce this.

Every chapter ends with a not-necessarily-related quick blurb about success, such as knowing how money is exchanged and putting your all into something. They are nice to read, but the real meat and interest lies within the chapter.

In all, this is a better book than expected and quite motivating. The stories were fascinating to read and the advice seems sturdy. Thanks, Dey Street, for sending it to me for review.
