The definitive biography
By Barbara A. Lee
Much has been written about Pope John XXIII, but I have not found anything in English or Italian that equals Peter Hebblethwaite's treatment of his life and times. This book is written as history, not hagiography, and precisely because of that the reader can judge why he was called "Good Pope John." The research that went into this book was clearly prodigious, encompassing among other sources official and unofficial Vatican documents, letters, memoirs, and the author's own interviews with some of Pope John's contemporaries. Hebblethwaite's interpretation of events, and judgment of the reliability of sources, is informed by his long experience as a Vatican correspondent and extensive knowledge of Vatican history and politics. His treatment of the events leading up to the Second Vatican Council is particularly illuminating. Unfortunately, this definitive biography is out of print, but hardcover and paperback editions seem to be widely available in the secondary market, and are well worth searching for.

Man of Peace
By M. A. Ramos
With access to Pope John XXIII's detailed journal and other personal archives the author, Peter Hebblethwaite a former Jesuit, provides a detailed record of the much-beloved religious leader's life. Hebblethwaite chronicles Pope John's many significant contributions to peace during his brief reign. We can see how many exploited the goodness and the kindness of Pope Roncalli during his lifetime. It seemed that His Holiness wished to set up "peace at any price" as a rule of government. We can see this from his utterance of his historic phrase, "Me, I was born to bless and not to condemn!" Which was his underlying order for the Ecumenical Council that for the first time in history limited themselves to blessings and therefore did not condemn the errors of its day.

THE DEFINITIVE BIOGRAPHY OF THE POPE WHO CALLED THE SECOND VATICAN COUNCIL
By Steven H Propp
Peter Hebblethwaite (1930-1994) was a British Jesuit priest (he left the priesthood to marry), editor, journalist and biographer; he has written many other books, such as Paul VI: The First Modern Pope (Fount classics), The Runaway Church: Post-Conciliar Growth or Decline, The New Inquisition? The Case of Edward Schillebeeckx and Hans Kung, etc.
He wrote in the Preface to this 1985 book, "Why another book on Pope John XXIII? Because... 'the rich personality of Pope John has not yet been discovered'... We thought we knew Pope John well enough, but we didn't. It was high time for a biography... The historian can only judge holiness by its effects. Pope John passes this test." (Pg. xiii)
Perhaps surprisingly, Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli (his pre-papal name) early on had a rather negative view of Teilhard de Chardin; "One day Roncalli remarked... 'This Teilhard fellow... why can't he be content with the catechism and the social doctrine of the Church, instead of bringing up all these problems?' When Rouquette replied that the Church could do without another Galileo affair, the Nuncio grew angry." (Pg. 219)
He notes, "So Pope John ended 1958, a year like any other year except that in it he chanced to become pope. He was astonished by the world's response to his simple gestures and deeply grateful to God... In his first ninety days he had, in famous phrase, 'flung open the windows of the Vatican'... The 'world' was suddenly interested in the papacy again. Simply by being faithful to himself and the spiritual tradition in which he had been brought up, he began to transform the papal office and the way in which it was perceived." (Pg. 305)
He records about a speech to cardinals at the start of Vatican II, "Pope John added just one thing more. He asked everyone to pray for '...a friendly and renewed invitation to our brothers of the separated Christian Churches to share with us in this banquet of grace and brotherhood...' That was what the Cardinals heard Pope John say. But that is not what appeared in the authorised version of the speech... The seventeen cardinals were unresponsive to his dramatic announcement." (Pg. 321-322)
He observes, "Another German-speaking theologian, Hans Küng, responded with equal alacrity to the announcement of the Council... [in his book The Council, Reform and Reunion] he ventured to set out an agenda for the Council. Needless to say, it was not quite the programme the Roman Curia had in mind... Küng skillfully appealed to Pope John who, he assumed somewhat gratuitously, would share his enthusiasm for all these causes... Küng had provided the real agenda for the Council, and drawn up the battle lines for its first session. Never again would an individual theologian have such influence." (Pg. 373-375)
He states, "If curial theologians were alarmed by the apparent 'relativism' of Pope John's remarks on language and faith, his comments on how to deal with errors sent shivers down the spine of the more politically inclined. No resourceful editing could alter the fact that in refraining from condemnations he had broken with a tradition at least four centuries old. Yet Pope John did it with great tact and skill... John knew that he was turning things upside down... Catholics could be tolerant without compromise. As for what laying aside of the rod would mean for the Communist world, time would tell." (Pg. 433)
This is a fascinating, very insightful biography, that will be of great interest to Catholics, and any students of the Second Vatican Council.
