Carolyn Chambers Clark, A.R.N.P., EdD, F.A.A.N., A.H.N.C., founded the Wellness Institute and now runs a website called Wellness and Relationship Resources at www.carolynchambersclark.com that provides continuing education materials, newsletters, seminars, and practice management consultation. As a certified advanced holistic nurse and mental health nurse practitioner, she has maintained a private practice with clients for more than 30 years, focusing on whole person wellness. She was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in 1980 and is an award-winning author who has conducted research and published widely on wellness, holistic, and self-care topics, including Wellness Practitioner, Integrating Complementary Procedures into Practice, Health Promotion in Communities: Holistic and Wellness Approaches (Springer Publishing Company, 2001),Holistic Assertiveness Skills for Nurses: Empower Yourself (and Others!) Between 1660 and 1777, more than fifty adaptations appeared in print and on the stage, works in which playwrights augmented, substantially cut, or completely rewrote the original plays. The plays were staged with new characters, new scenes, new endings, and, underlying all this novelty, new words.

Why did this happen? And why, in the later eighteenth century, did it stop? These questions have serious implications regarding both the aesthetics of the literary text and its treatment, for the adaptations manifest the period's perceptions of Shakespeare. As such, they demonstrate an important evolution in the definition of poetic language, and in the idea of what constitutes a literary work.

In The Re-Imagined Text, Jean I. Marsden examines both the adaptations and the network of literary theory that surrounds them, thereby exploring the problems of textual sanctity and of the author's relationship to the text. As she demonstrates, Shakespeare's works, and English literature in general, came to be defined by their words rather than by the plots and morality on which the older aesthetic theory focused―a clear step toward our modern concern for the word and its varying levels of signification.

As an NLP Training Consultant and Coach Rintu Basu specialises in developing people and businesses to maximise their performance in any area. "The Missing Link?"

If you are an NLP enthusiast like me, no doubt you have read countless books both about the theory and practice of language patterns for both business and social use.

There are some good ones out there of course, but even those left me with a lot of patterns but without much in the way of practical examples in order to drill them in to my neurology. After all,the way I see it, the whole point is that the patterns should become 2nd nature and appear naturally in your language.

In my opinion, this superb book has given us NLPers (and anyone else interested in persuasion) the "missing link".
In what I found to be a completely riveting style, Rintu not only provides numerous practical examples of the patterns, he actually uses those patterns in the course of teaching you those patterns! This provides instant drilling, plus automatic feedback that you have grasped the concepts when you realize you are picking up the patterns he has hidden in the book. I personally have found this invaluable in my mastery of the patterns.

As for the patterns themselves, the book is structured that new lessons are integrated with the old ones so you are mastering the whole skill-not isolated patterns- another benefit I have not found in other books.
In addition' I have found patterns described here that I have not seen in other NLP books. One of them is actually my most used pattern!
All in all this book is a winner and is an incredible addition,in my opinion, to anyones persuasion bookshelf.

Excellent Quick Guide

Many years ago I took the NLP Practitioners course in California. I can honestly say that this book was not only a refresher, but I learned (and understood) more from this book (a few hours of reading) than I did for most of my x hours practitioner course. The book is full of pertinent examples and real world application. If you are in the persuasion business (and we are all in the persuasion business) this book is a MUST have, read and do. So the issue is not whether the book has value, the real issue is how much more improvement can you handle in your life as a result of reading and applying this book. Imagine applying the principles in the book to increase your income, get that promotion, get that special someone, or just increase the quality of life. Get the book, read the book and go get what you want..today.

I'm glad I bought this book

After reading this book, I used the skills to enhance my online dating profile. The response I received from my profile was overwhelming! I have gotten several emails and winks from women and I just had coffee last night with someone I am really interested in. We both had a great time and will go out again.

This book is not only great for personal use, but business as well and gives several examples. Whether you are conducting a meeting or giving a sales presentation, these techniques are helpful to direct communication to your way of thinking, without manipulation. I highly recommend this book.

She has also authored textbooks on keyboarding, WordPerfect, desktop publishing, and voice recognition for Paradigm Publishing. Denise Seguin has been teaching at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario since 1986. She has taught a variety of software applications to adult learners in Continuing Education courses and learners in postsecondary Information Technology diploma programs. When I ordered this book, it was described as "new and shrink wrapped", but it was not shrink wrapped, and it appears shop worn. Additionally, it didn't come with the necessary CD containing vital exercises for my class. Bummed, but need the book right now. Lesson learned.

Biased and selective presentation of important ideas

Before plunking down your credit card for a copy of Drive, by Dan Pink, consider making do with just his TED talk. The talk contains the substance of this book without the excess padding.

The book has about 250 pages. One hundred fifty or so of those are for the basic content. It includes the Introduction and Parts I and II (chapters one through six).

The other hundred pages are a "Toolkit." This includes some material that didn't seem to fit anywhere else, a glossary, a recap of Drive, twenty conversation starters (useful at cocktail parties), a reading list, and a fitness plan. That's forty percent of the book. And none of it helps you put what you've read to work.

The core points of the book are covered in the TED talk. You can listen to it in about fifteen minutes or read it in about ten. You won't get the fitness plan or the conversation starters. You will get the essence of Pink's message.

If you're a boss or concerned about leadership, you need to become familiar with that message. The ideas are important. Pink's rendering of them, for good or ill, will define and influence the discussion of motivation in business for quite a while.

He does get the big picture right. He says that people would prefer activities where they can pursue three things.

Autonomy: People want to have control over their work.

Mastery: People want to get better at what they do.

Purpose: People want to be part of something that is bigger than they are.

This matches research that I've done with class members for over twenty-five years. They discuss a time when "it was great to come to work" and then create a description of what those times are like. The descriptions vary slightly in wording but always include the following.

Productivity.
Community.
Interesting and meaningful work.
Clear and reasonable expectations.
Frequent and usable feedback.
Consistency.
Fairness.
Maximum control possible over work life.

I'm describing the kinds of workplaces where intrinsic motivation happens. Pink is describing three things that provide that kind of motivation. In most highly effective workplaces, it's the boss that is the most important force creating an environment when intrinsic motivation can happen.

Top management sets the basic compensation and benefits structure. If that isn't perceived as fair and consistent, natural intrinsic motivation won't kick in.

It's your individual supervisor who has the biggest effect on your daily working environment. That's why there are pockets of excellence in otherwise horrid companies and why even the best companies have workers who are unhappy and teams that are unproductive.

This book won't give you the connection from concept to workplace. But Pink does deliver many key ideas that matter.

Key Idea: There is a difference between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation.

Key Idea: Intrinsic motivators are more powerful.

Key Idea: If you use monetary rewards to get people to perform the way you want, those rewards may have the opposite effect.

These are important things for a boss to know, but if you only have Drive to guide you, you will get some things very wrong.

The examples that are used are heavily weighted toward academic and consulting studies. It's not apparent that Pink talked to a single worker or frontline supervisor. The book would have been more helpful if he had.

There are some pre-requisites to having intrinsic motivation kick in. Pink mentions in passing that there needs to be fair compensation in place. That's true, but it's not an "oh-by-the-way" point. It's Maslow's Hierarchy in work clothes.

Throughout the book, Pink equates "monetary" incentives with "extrinsic motivation." That ignores praise, promotion, preferment (in scheduling, eg), the admiration of peers, time off, and a host of other positive incentives. It also skews the discussion toward academic studies and away from the real workplace.

Pink also presents the issue as if it were intrinsic motivators (good) versus extrinsic motivators (not good). In the TED talk he even says "This is the titanic battle between these two approaches."

That's not how things work in the real world. Intrinsic and extrinsic motivators and their effects interact. You don't have a simple choice of which lever to pull. You have to understand and influence a complex system.

Those shortcomings are important. They derive from one of the most important things to understand if you've going to study this material critically and turn it to good use.

Pink has written this book like a political speech. He writes to make a point, not to present a balanced argument.

Like a good speech writer, Pink uses language that implies value judgments. He uses terms like "humanistic psychology" for things he agrees with. When he doesn't agree he uses terms like "rat-like seeking."

Like a good speech writer, Pink makes sweeping statements without providing support for them. "Sometimes" and "a surprisingly large proportion of the time" are used with no indication of what they actually mean. He says that sales quotas "can be effective," but doesn't tell you when or how often.

Like a good speech writer, Pink leaves out things that don't support his simplified message. There's no mention of studies that support the use of rewards in business settings.

Like a good speech writer, Pink boils his facts down to only the ones that support his argument. If all you read was Drive, you would think that the work of Deci and Ryan is about the superiority of intrinsic motivators to extrinsic in all situations.

But their work is more complex than Pink describes it. It includes analysis of effective extrinsic motivators as well as extrinsic motivators that are counter-productive.

Like a good speech writer, pink, picks up studies from one sphere and applies them elsewhere without telling you what he's doing. Deci and Ryan have done admirable and important work, but it's on motivation in personal development, not in the workplace.

Like a good speech writer, Pink ignores contradictions. He describes a horrid, slave ship workplace ruled by carrots and sticks. Later he mentions that most "flow" experiences happen at work.

Pink tells us about "20 percent" time for creativity at Google and Atlassian. But he doesn't discuss why they only offer their intrinsic reward of creativity to engineers and not the other workers in the company.

Like a good speech writer, Pink sets up the straw man of "Motivation 2.0" so that he's easy to knock down. And, inconvenient truths are sometimes mentioned in passing and then never heard from again.

The Bottom Line

You should learn what's in this book because, for better or worse, it is influencing the conversation about what makes a great workplace. But because of the presentation and selective use of facts, you can't rely on this book alone to help you do a better job as a boss.

Great book.

Compares what we think motivates us, with what really motivates us. Draws a distinction between "management 2.0," defined as management techniques like compensation, benefits, and paid time off, compared to "management 3.0" which focuses on quality of life, control over doing meaningful work, and getting along with co-workers.

Strongly recommended, especially for those in management, HR, or entrepreneurs.

Barely scratches the surface

Drive is a basic overview of the last few decades of research on motivation. If you are looking for a "get your feet wet" primer, this will do fine. However, if you want to delve deeper into the concepts and you want to have your "Okay, but what about...?" questions answered, the Drive falls short. In many ways, Drive feels like a long introduction to another book.

SO real.

I’m not sure how to write this review. It’s probably going to end up being jibberish, so I apologize in advance. Also, I’m crying like a little girl as I write it, so if I misspell things and I don’t catch it on a reread, oops! To put it out there for those that don’t want to read all of my review – Wrecking Ball was very well written, the characters were very well developed, and it was overwhelmingly emotional. Does it have romance, angst, steaminess, and a bit of humor? Yep, all of the above. So if you want to know what I thought of it, that’s it. I highly recommend it. I can’t say enough great things about it. If you’re looking for a simple “Did Erin enjoy it?” Yes. Yes, I enjoyed it. If you want to know MORE than that, keep reading...

This book is about a married couple who are forced to rediscover the meaning of their marriage. Sophia has to decide if she can forgive her husband, Brandon, and continue living the life they had after finding him with another woman. After sending him away with their two daughters, she goes on a trip with her adventurous little sister, Tia. Brandon (and I’ll admit, even I) thought Tia was trying to push Sophia to move on. You see further in the book that it was quite the opposite. Tia helps Sophia realize what she wants and needs. Sophia is so strong but had let herself become something she wasn’t, as did Brandon. As heartbreaking as it was to feel how broken they both were with the separation, it was worth it in the end.

I LOVED the writing style in this book. Toler develops these characters perfectly. It’s not too much but enough that you really feel like you know them. There were just enough flashbacks for you to see how great they once were together, and that makes seeing their current state that much more bittersweet. It was also written from both pov’s, which I think helped. You don’t ever question Brandon’s love for Sophia because you KNOW he’s hurting with her.

This book shows what happens to a couple when things get comfortable. They get lazy. They stop loving as intensely as they should. After many different rude awakenings from family and friends, they have to decide for themselves if it’s worth trying to salvage their relationship. It’s intense, it’s emotional, and it’s deep.

If you remember a few months ago, Katie had a serious heart to heart with y’all through her review for Something Worth Saving by Chelsea Landon. I think this is my SWS. Wrecking Ball affected me, much more than I expected it to. I’ll be honest and say, I had forgotten what it was even about when I started it last night. Had I known, I’m not sure I would have started it. But I did and now I’m so glad I picked it up.

Wrecking Ball has stuck with me since the moment I finished. I just can’t let myself let go of this book, these characters, and their struggle. I think the reason I can’t seem to get over it or think of anything else is because it’s SO real. Without the cheating, their lives resemble my life and marriage. We aren’t unhappy. We don’t fight a lot, although we don’t necessarily agree on everything. But it’s all become very routine and…boring. We’re comfortable. We have three kids and full time jobs. We go to work, pick up kids from daycare, make dinner, and put the kids in bed. I go to bed and read, or do blogging duties; he stays up and does homework or plays video games. It’s our life and not a bad life, but now I’m dissecting all of it. Every look, every small detail that could hold more of a meaning than I thought. I want it to be less comfortable and more what it used to be. I want that intense love back.

I’ve gone way off and no one cares about my marriage, so I’ll just say this. Wrecking Ball affected me. It changed me. It IS my life, and it feels like I learned the lessons with the characters right along with them. A book has never done this to me before, so that must mean something, right? It will forever mean something to me because it made me step back and realize what was going on right in front of my face, every single day.

Overall, it’s reality for SO many of us. B.N. Toler digs deep and grabs your emotions with a grip that won’t let go. She wrote a beautiful novel that will have me reeling for months, and I love that a hobby I enjoy is able to do that for me. It’s emotional, heartbreaking, and motivating all in one. Bravo Toler, Bravo.

Yvette is a five star author and embroiderer, all of whose books you should own. I do. Having produced the left-handed embroiderer's guide earlier in the year, Yvette has decided not to leave us right handers out. This is a superb dictionary for all embroiderers, so don't miss out. As with all Yvette's books it has superb attention to detail. Beautiful line drawings explain each stitch. This has just become my number one embroidery book. I am right handed but have a copy of the left hand edition which I have previously reviewed here. These books are exceptionally clear in their directions and stitches are shown worked in all sorts of different ways and in sample to really give inspiration for their use. I am finding this book invaluable in my City and Guilds stitch samples. I have already got a few stitch dictionaries in my library, including the classics, but this is my first choice now as it is so bright and light and well indexed. About the Author
David B. Weems is an acknowledged expert in speaker systems and speaker enclosures. He has written several books, including all four editions of Designing, Building, and Testing Your Own Speaker Systems—with Projects and the first edition of this volume. Weems also has contributed numerous articles on speaker systems to such widely read electronics publications as Audio, High Fidelity, Popular Electronics, Radio Electronics, and Speaker Builder. G. R. Koonce is a member of the Audio Engineering Society and contributes many articles to Speaker Builder magazine.

OK for starters.

A good beginner's book for those interested in building their own speakers without getting into heavy mathematics, passive electronics, complex woodworking, or folded horns. The book explains some the rudiments of speaker theory, and barely enough to design your own simple crossover network. The book has several economical projects which the author already debugged and are ready to build, including: the make and model of the speakers, list of passive components, schematic - which usually include extras like a Zobel network, and the cabinet dimensions. Their are several two-way projects and one three-way with a ten-inch woofer. Most designs use a soft-dome tweeter, if that's what you like. There is a list of raw component vendors in the back of the book. The designs for the ported boxes use the Thiel method, and I am finding that this may be conservatively sized toward the large side with respect to a flat bass response. The prose is a bit wordy, but still easy to read. Overall, I have learned a few things from this book.

Thorough introduction - worthless projects

Great introduction to loudspeaker design theory. Very good, in-depth discussion of crossovers with usable equations.
However, the projects and suggested projects aren't worth the paper they're written on. After studying the theories on cabinet and crossover design, and researching available drivers, I don't think many people are going to be interested in using the cheapest crap available for drivers. The projects all use Audax, Peerless, Seas, and Vifa drivers - the worst junk available. The authors themselves state that these drivers deteriorate quickly, and that all the drivers for one particular project can be purchased for seven dollars each! Are you interested in investing all the time required to learn, design and build a set of speakers and then invest $28 in four drivers? I'm certainly not.
The included software Crossover Modeling Program certainly has potential, and are useful for building the low-buck projects in this book. It includes treatment for virtually all the variables available for manipulation by the designer/builder. However, it's DOS based, almost impossible to navigate, only has data files available for the trash drivers used in the project, and, in fact, doesn't even have all the data files for all of those drivers. If they've got data files for good drivers like Focal, Eton, or even Dynaudio available on a web site or something, the program would be VERY USEFULL. And it is still usefull for modeling the crossover, but without linking in the driver specs, it's guesswork as to how the response curves are going to come out, let alone the actual speaker performance.
It's amazing to me that the authors give such a good treatment to everything, go to all the trouble of developing a good modeling program, and then build garbage. You're going to have more invested in this book than you will in the speaker projects themselves. They even go into buying and/or building fairly sophisticated test equipment - for what? To test your $15 driver? After discussing all the advanced considerations, the projects use surface-mounted drivers with defractions rings instead of routing out the cabintes to flush-mount the drivers. Are you going to put the hundreds of hours into a project and then forego the extra few minutes to properly rout out the driver openings? I'm not!!
Another serious shortcoming is that all the test data only goes down to 200 hertz, and almost all the response curves show a 3+ decibel rise in the 200-500 hz range. Well hey, bass response is where the going gets tough! But it makes the low-dollar, two- way, 5-6" 'woofer' projects look acceptable. The three-way projects are also a joke since the 'woofers' are still only 6.5". Believe me, there is going to be NO appreciable bass response at any significant volume level with ANY of these projects, and who wants to be crossing over to a subwoofer at 200 hz. I like 60-80 hz much better. And I'm not interested in having a system where a 5-6" driver is resonsible for handling everything from 3000 Hz on down - approximately seven octaves!
I DO RECOMMEND buying this book - and then tearing out everything after page 165 .

Disappointing after initial promise

If you are only interested in "spoonfed" recipe loudspeaker designs, this book will be great for you. It does cover some important theory initially and has some very clear and succinct illustrations, but I felt that it was a let down of my expectations, especially if you pay too much attention to things like the cover illustration (way too "hi-end" and complex for this book!).
Speaker building can easily become an addictive and engaging hobbie, and if you think at all that you may want more than a "casual glance" I'd strongly recommend "LOUDSPEAKER DESIGN COOKBOOK" by Vance Dickason instead. It may seem to be a more technical book but it has "staying power" and is a longer term reference text that the Weems/Koonce book.
On the positive side, if you do lack the time, inclination or confidence to get into the "nitty gritty", this book does have projects that feature relatively simple enclosure construction, require readily available (and not too expensive) speaker drivers and components and it has choice in terms of scale, complexity (to an extent) etc in the projects.
