About the Author
Patrick Hamill is Professor Emeritus of Physics at San Jose State University. He has taught physics for over thirty years and his research interests are in celestial mechanics and atmospheric physics.

Excellent Mechanics Text

Hamill's book is an excellent mechanics text. It is written in a manner that is easy to read and understand, without compromising scope, depth and complexity of the subject. In my opinion, it is superior to other undergraduate texts, such as Goldstein, Symon or Taylor. The style is reminiscent of the Griffiths' E&M text - all the concepts are clearly explained and all the derivations are worked out in detail and without skipping any steps. It is very clear from the start that the main purpose of the book is to make a student really understand what mechanics is all about. The book is perfectly suited for a year-long course in upper-division undergraduate mechanics, and is an excellent reference for graduate physics students.

Learn mechanics the right way

As a disclaimer, the author was my mechanics teacher for this course. The book is second to none, and is easily on par with any Griffiths text. Dr. Hamill explains difficult concepts in a clear and concise fashion while paying strict attention to the necessary physics, all in a conversational tone; his writing style is thus similar to Griffiths.
Although I had a draconian mechanics instructor for my graduate course, I was able to survive primarily because of this book and that course. I even found it an excellent text for studying for the qualifier, although it is only on an undergraduate level.
Words escape me for a recommendation. None are sufficient.

Initial thoughts

My initial thoughts after looking through this book is that it is far more readable than any other dynamics or mechanics book out there. Although the price may seem steep this is an extensive text that I would recommend as an upper division text.
