About the Author

Anthony Boardman

Anthony E. Boardman is the Van Dusen Professor of Business Administration at the University of British Columbia. His publications on cost-benefit analysis have appeared in many leading academic journals including the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, Socio-Economic Planning Sciences, Annals of Regional Science, and the Journal of Comparative Policy Analysis Research and Practice. He has also served as a consultant for the Treasury of New Zealand and all levels of government in Canada.

David Weimer

David L. Weimer is professor of public affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has published work involving the application of cost-benefit analysis to energy policy and the use of contingent valuation surveys. He also has contributed entries on cost-benefit analysis to the International Encyclopedia of the Social and Behavioral Sciences and the New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics (2nd edition).

Aidan R. Vining

Aidan R. Vining is the CNABS Professor of Business and Government Relations in the Faculty of Business Administration, Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada) and holds a Ph.D. from the Goldman Graduate School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. His articles related to cost-benefit analysis have appeared in a wide range of journals. In addition to authoring these articles, Dr. Vining is the author of Policy Analysis; Concepts and Practice with David Weimer (4th. Edition, Pearson Prentice-Hall, 2005) and has recently co-edited Building the Future: Issues in Public Infrastructure in Canada (C.D. Howe) which analyzes the costs and benefits of major infrastructure projects in Canada. David Greenberg

David Greenberg is a professor emeritus of economics at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). In 2002 he worked as a labor market analyst at the Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit within the British Cabinet Office, helping design a random assignment evaluation of a pilot program that attempts to help retain disadvantaged workers in employment and aid their advancement and is currently working on the cost-benefit analysis of this pilot program. In addition, he is presently responsible for the cost-benefit analyses of two on-going U.K. programs: the New Deal for Disabled Persons and has taught a course in cost-benefit analysis at UMBC for many years.

Even the prof had a difficult time getting through it

I had to buy this book for a class I took on Cost-benefit analysis (which is probably why you're thinking of buying it, too). The contents of my review won't have much influence on your choice to purchase it, as that decision has already been made by your prof. But I think I owe you a few warnings.

Some of the chapters are well-written (the chapters on discounting and compounding and time value), but most of them are confusing (the chapters on option value and the section about the optimal growth discount model). Even our professor, who has a BA in econ from Yale and a PhD in econ from Berkeley, had trouble getting through these sections. Some of the homework problems at the ends of the chapters ask about material that the text never fully explains. In a few instances, the book reminds you why you hate integral calculus.

So although I can't stop you from buying this, I can at least warn you that your trip through its pages will be nothing like a trip through the beautiful mountains on the cover. Unless you were planning on climbing the mountains. In January. Without GPS or crampons.

Not the most useful, but comprehensive.

This book by Anthony Boardman et al. is a heavy read. It is not a book you would want to read from A to Z in order to understand Cost-Benefit Analysis or CBA, but it is one of the better reference books I have found. The only downside I found was a very theoretical approach and lack of really useful examples. Nevertheless, not one element of CBA seems to be left untouched. This book is a valuable reference to anyone relying on CBA as a decision-making tool, because it will assist you in understanding what it is that you are analyzing when applying CBA.

Not recommended

I've read 5 chapter so far, and this is by far one of the worst textbooks i ever read. Some of the examples are pretty bad, explanations of some concepts are also short and confusing, and (as another reviewer said) some of the problems given in the end of the chapters use techniques and concepts that were not explained in the book! Even the prof is confused!
Ignore if you can.

About the Author

THOMAS BULKOWSKI is a successful investor with more than thirty years of experience trading stocks. He is also the author of Encyclopedia of Candlestick Charts and Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns. His work has appeared in magazines such as Technical Analysis of Stocks & Commodities, SFO, Active Trader, The Technical Analyst, The Trader's Journal, and Traders'. Before earning enough from his investments to "retire" from his day job at age 36, Bulkowski was a hardware design engineer with Raytheon and a senior software engineer for Tandy Corporation.

I recently purchased Tom Bulkowski's latest book, Getting Started In Chart Patterns Second Edition and I had only one problem with it …. I couldn't put it down!
I'm an experienced position and swing trader and from Chapter 1 through competition of this book Thomas has helped me resolve the questions that keep reoccurring in today's trading environment.

For example in Chapter 2, Identifying Chart Patterns, Thomas gives excellent examples of what I consider happening now in the Dow trading.
So I immediately found helpful the second paragraph, The Blank Chart and to back up his comments he has figure 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3 which leads up to 2.4 which confirms the fact why this year, 2014 being a similar pattern. Upon seeing these examples and reading his explanation regarding these patterns it helps me realize how difficult a trading environment we are in and to be patient with these patterns. As the early bird doesn't get the worm the early bird gets cooked!

Chapter 2, made me realize even long-term holders can get brutally attacked and even dragged down to the point of no return as the chart patterns wreak havoc on experienced traders. Thomas gives the statistics of success and failure to help guide you to determine if purchases are even worth purchasing and if so when and for how long! That information and his percentages of success are worth the purchase of the book.

This year 2014 has been a lot of entry point purchase head fakes and numerous land mines occurring. So if you're in a position and it changes directions, Thomas explains not only how but when to jump ship! This trading year has been one full of washing out weak hands, position stagnation and a lot of market noise to throw your trading off track, a lot of reversals and Chapter 2 puts all these current problematic issues into view, front and center and then what you should do.

Chapter 3, Trend Lines is a great chapter and after reading it a few times over to soak it all in. I reviewed all my current trades and drew lines to confirm direction is still in my favor and to reconfirm my buy and sell points. I also found page 21, Touch Spacing very helpful and yes it's something I have been ignoring in my buy and sell decisions. Many thanks to Thomas for the Touch Space reminder. Trend Line Length is also helpful in my position hold times. The measure rule can be a stickler to figure out but once you get familiar with such useful calculations you will find yourself relying and using this formula on all your trades! Thomas makes the formula easy to use and handholds you through his examples and yes with charts and pictures, yeah! Thomas even adds in a dash of witty humor so you will remember what you are learning.

Chapter 4, my version of dissecting the frog, after you find your support and resistance all other organs are in the same place! Page 37, Fibonacci Retracements, figure 4.2 is a favorite chart of mine because I keep seeing these daily and weekly wing patterns so my ah-ha moment was realizing they are Broadening Bottoms and Tops and now how and when to buy and sell them! This alone will help me make future money on trades! Again, this pattern is happening daily in the marketplace and now I recognize it.

Chapter 5, 10 Buy Signals
1) What a great review and great review of buy and sell points.
2) An excellent visual aid and simple explanation of which patterns are bearish and bullish. I love this chapter and will review it daily and prior to purchases.
3) Page 79 figure 5.18 another great chart and excellent explanation of all the patterns that are occurring this year 2014. Also, more excellent examples of charts and his trading tactics.
4) The different types of market bottoms is a favorite of mine. They try to disguise themselves but spotting a bottom is sure to make money as it turns upward! Recognizing a bottom is worth its weight in gold.

Chapter 6, 10 Sell Signals
Now that we recognize bottoms or are buy points, Thomas takes us to the top… shows and explains sell signals and/or tops…Wee! It is fun to be at the top when you bought in 20 points ago, now what?…… Knowing his 10 sell, sell, sell signals and the patterns that scream out sell! A great review for when I'm ready to click the sell button.

I hope you gain as much insight from this book as I did.

All charts. Nothing but charts. I had no clue there was so much to see in charts. The charts are explained very clearly. It wasn't exactly what I was looking for but this book really is what the cover says it is, charts, charts, and more charts.

I highly recommend this book to all levels of traders

I am not a seasoned stock trader; however, I have read many books on techincal analysis, have taken lessons from pros, attended many webinars, and have been studying the technical aspects of the market for about 2 years. This book covers it all and has brought confidence to my trading. I highly recommend this book to all levels of traders, there's a lot of simple principles of trading you already know, such as double top, support, resistance, etc. but there are a few gems you can still take away from reading this.

I am excited to start reading Mr. Bulkowski's swing trading book next.

The author really does present significant insights, but the irony is that they would have been best summarized literally on the back of a napkin, rather than dragging them out into full book form. So it reads like a 300-slide PowerPoint presentation advocating brevity.

The sequel, "Unfolding the Napkin" (which I also read) is better thought out, serves more as a method, and contains more visual examples - but it still rehashes pretty much the same material as the first book in order to make its point, so reading both books was redundant in my opinion.

The simple cover and concept shields a deeply powerful tool

I saw the book on the shelf at Borders and the cover caught my attention. I read the first few pages and knew I had to read the rest.

I am a technical trainer and writer and have been teaching classes for more than 10 years now. For the last 7 years I've been using a pen tablet in my classes to draw diagrams on-the-fly while lecturing about different technology concepts. The attendees have given phenomenally positive feedback about this learning method.

Now, I find this book that not only validates the process I've been using but helps me take it to the next level. The author reveals the four steps to visual thinking and the six problem categories that we all face. He shows you how to do it with case studies and examples that are practical.

One thing that I think many will find helpful is the way the author quickly removes any fear of drawing you may have. He gives the testimony of many attendees that he has helped overcome this fear of drawing in front of others. Personally, my family plays Pictionary very regularly because I want my children to be comfortable with this process.

My favorite part was the Appendix: The Science of Visual Thinking. I found it very interesting as it presents scientific research as it relates to this simple process.

If you want a great new way to solve problems and a great way to communicate ideas, I think you'll find this book very useful.

1st edition still a good deal, but this one is worth considering

If money or portability are your primary considerations, then get a used copy of the first edition, as it communicates the central ideas in an almost identical fashion and is easier to carry around. However, if a few more dollars and a slightly-bigger book don't bother you, consider buying this new edition, as it's subtly-revised diagrams and improved explanation of key brain science concepts make it easier to understand on the first read. Both books are hardcovers and much of the content (including, sadly, the Resources listed in the Appendix) is the same. However, there are a number of important differences between these editions:

SIZE

At 8.2 x 8 x 1.3 inches, it is bigger than the first edition, which clocked in at 7.1 x 7.1 x 1 inches. While this does allow for the pictures to be bigger and slightly easier to see, it also means a larger, oddly-shaped book to carry around. This only matters if, like me, you like to schlepp your favorite books around and carry them on the bus.

PAGES & TEXT

Includes more pages at 304 pages, rather than the previous edition's 278, making it a mere 0.2 pounds heavier. 10 of those additional 26 pages are the new "Appendix A: The Ten (and a Half) Commandments of Visual Thinking." This is a very useful set of 11 rules of thumb to keep in mind when applying Roam's visual thinking technique. Most, if not all, of these rules are mentioned elsewhere in the book, so don't let this appendix be your only reason for purchasing the newest edition. In addition, these 11 rules are summarized nicely in a slideshow elsewhere on the internet ([...]/visual_think_map/the-10-12-commandments-of-visual-thinking-the-lost-chapter-from-the-back-of-the-napkin). Nonetheless, it is helpful to have them laid out, visually, in one place. Another 8 pages are the new Foreword, which explains Roam's experience of visually attempting to sell the idea for this book to the publishers at Penguin. While interesting and a good example, it is also not a reason to buy this edition.

COLOR & PICTURES

Instead of just black text/pictures, red is now used to highlight chapter headings and subheadings, as well as help readers distinguish between parts of Roam's originally-all-black illustrations and diagrams. This is astonishingly helpful - as it is much easier to understand his diagrams at first glance. Given the table on page 66 (identical to that on page 72 in the first edition), it is no surprise that a small change in color makes it easier for our eyes to distinguish among the parts of his diagrams. In addition, he has added some additional sketches in the book to better visually explain some of his concepts. I was particularly impressed by his improvements to chapters 4 and 5 on how to look better and see sharper. Both his pictures and his text in this section have been revised to provide more clarity for potentially-confusing sections that are partially dependent on communicating a few key brain science concepts. His diagrams illustrating the 6 ways of seeing/showing are also a bit clearer than in the first edition.
